If fragmentation is a concern then go with a minimum of a 10.5" barrel. Although a 11.5 or longer barrel greatly improves velocity over a 10.5. If you can wait PSA has a 12" FNH hammer forged 4150 HP MPI 1/7 twist with a rail for 499.00. BCM sells a similar upper but its a 11.5 without vanguard's also for 499.

The BCM uppers are w/o BCG & CH as well?
Would fragmentation only be a concern if the firearm is used for HD/SD- correct? Not so much of a concern for a range toy?
The DD is available in the same configuration but with a 11.5 inch bbl, same price.

I missed that. If the bcg and ch are included than buy the DD since that is the better buy. For HD SD SHTF I'd go with the 11.5 If its just for fun I wouldn't go lower than 10" because of the cycling issues sometime found on shorter barrels

Respectable fragmentation can be achieved with shorter barrells if you aren't using FMJs.

That aside I would still keep it at least 10in if there is a remote chance of any serious use in the future.

Can't deny the fun factor of the 7.5in models though

Nosler also states fragmentation at any velocity, and no doubt a 7.5 would be fun. If you where looking for something compact look for a Draco or Mini Draco.

Hollow Points? or do you need soft points for frag out of a 7.5?

Which is lighter? That would be an important criteria for me for an AR pistol.
