The bolt is like a Chinese puzzle . The extractor is held in place by the spring tension of the ejector. The firing pin is held in place by the extractor. These are wear items you should have a parts kit for your bolt.

Broken M1A

Thanks for the help guys. This is why I love Cal Guns. I got a lot better information than I ever expected from my original post.
I'll make the warranty claim but will likely buy a Fulton extractor as well. I'll be switching ammo as well - I figured that all would be well in the world as long as I was using match grade. I guess cheaper milsurp may be the way to go. And that WOULD meet the owner's manual guidelines of using GI spec ammo.
Springfield should send you a new extractor if you mail them the old broken one.
To change it a 30-06 case in the chamber and then put the ejector and spring in their hole and the extractor plunger spring where it goes. THen push the bolt against the case and that should allow you to line everything up and get the new extractor in.
PS - the firing pin has a slot in the side of it that lines up with the extractor. So if you forget about that and put it back together without it lined up the firing pin will fall out.Comment

A lot of blasphemy being said about the M1A here. You get every penny worth you pay for it. Like all machine and high production manufacturing, some times faulty parts roll of the line. This happens with a lot more guns than just the M1A. But like others have stated there are upgrades. Just like every rifle out there, some areas could always be improved. That ain't a stolen gun under my car seat - it's undocumented sports equipment!

Might have something to with the ammo; I'm not sure but I think powder they're using in new GMM might be on the slow side of what's recommended for an M1A gas system. That being said I've had 4 different Springfield M1A's and they've all run flawlessly; I also load my own ammo or shoot straight NATO mil spec (mostly south african or Aussie)
He got a bum extractor from the factory it happens.Comment
