I looked at the photo and it does look like a cast part. I'm surprised, my Scout has been running strong, since about a year ago. Have maybe 800 rounds through it max. It is my favorite rifle, I am gearing up to build one with LRB receiver and parts. I wish I could put it in a Sage stock, but they are evil.

OP, sorry for your bad luck.
IMO AR's break more extractors than the newer SA M1A factory rifles.
No sense whining about a less than $10 part. Just have them send you a new one 1st class.
*Next OP will be updating this thread about how great the CS is at SA.

The new M1As aren't up to the same quality as the old USGI parts built ones. Replace with a GI part and enjoy the next 5000 rounds.

I had an M1A Loaded a few years back, the extractor quickly failed. I have a Scout and the extractor didn't work properly since day one. I bought a few Beretta extractors (BM 59 tyoes i presume) and the one one I installed has worked perfectly.

Looking at the factory extractors on my rifles the parts look cast and poorly made.

1000 rounds and no problems. Never anything above 168 gr. and never anything but 7.62. I will be getting a USGI complete parts kit because it's only a matter of time...

Call Springfield armory. They will fix this on their dime. Customer service is top notch.

Thanks for the help guys. This is why I love Cal Guns. I got a lot better information than I ever expected from my original post.

I'll make the warranty claim but will likely buy a Fulton extractor as well. I'll be switching ammo as well - I figured that all would be well in the world as long as I was using match grade. I guess cheaper milsurp may be the way to go. And that WOULD meet the owner's manual guidelines of using GI spec ammo.

Honestly Springfield does NOT have the best rep on the M1a's from what I have heard over the years, seems like for this amount of money the failure rate is too high. I would be leary of depending on a commercially made M1A...... now maybe a rifle assembled with all original GI parts on a good receiver would probably be ok......

I just never seem to have these issues on any of my FAL's and god knows what some have been through...

Yep Springfield M1a are the bottom of the barrel in quality and value for the $$$. At one time they used high quality castings and GI parts. I owned 3 of them and they were wonderful. Todays Springfields M1a are made in taiwan cheap . Though the Springfield yahoos never believe the facts. There are high quality M1a on the marker if just a couple hundred dollars more.

I've always advise folks here looking for M!As to look for a used one, with a S/N in the sub 70K range...the earlier the better. Thats about when they started running out of GI parts. My 50K rifle is all GI (cept receiver) Winnie barrel,H/R trigger group and the rest TRW. Never a hick-up. And as far as the FAL fans here..there great rifles too, but few will outshoot an M1A..Ive had both an IMBEL and Enterprise. Although great ( and mega cool looking) battle rifles,Neither would come close to the accuracy of My M1a.... my 2 cents

A lot of blasphemy being said about the M1A here. You get every penny worth you pay for it. Like all machine and high production manufacturing, some times faulty parts roll of the line. This happens with a lot more guns than just the M1A. But like others have stated there are upgrades. Just like every rifle out there, some areas could always be improved.

same exact thing happen to my scout!!!! I replaced the bolts' guts with USGI and its now been very reliable!!!!

The warranty is nice, but I rather not dick around with the chance of that happening it again... Otherwise, still like SAI!!
