Hand stops are way older than the AFG, and for me they work just as well if you're trying to get over the bore.

New fad? Hand stops have been around for years, just not necessarily on EBRs(that being said, people have been using VFGs as hand stops anyway).

Low profile, can help make sure your hand is in a consistent position on the forend, can allow you to push your hand away or pull it towards you(if you want something not so neutral, without relying on the mag well), allows you to get that consistent hand position in whatever spot feels comfortable specifically for you on the forend, and doesn't add much weight.

They're simply another option that some people like, and some don't.

I had both of those at one time or another on a rifle. Though I liked the way it looked, It really messed up my marksmanship. It just wasn't in the best interest of my style of shooting. I tried to get used to them but ended up just giving them both away when I decided to go Magpul-free. Fad? I don't know... There are a lot of people that just like to put "stuff" on their rifles. I prefer just a regular broomstick grip.

I like the AFG because it gives me something to grab on to when the fore end gets super hot. Nothing like grabbing some hot rails without gloves! >_<

It depends on the handguard/rail and if you rap your thumb around the top. With a MOE handguard a AFG works and feels great. On a rail a VG works better. An AFG on a thinner profile rail with out rail covers and your thumb wrapped around the other side works great, but will get hot if you shoot too fast. Handstops work for me on a push forward application, but pulling back is feels awkward.

Fad means something that gets popular, not a new invention.

I didn't say it was a new invention, but finally figuring out that you don't need a big VFG if all you need is a stop for your hand isn't new.

I have the Larue handstop, and it's very functional. Definitely not a fad, and I don't buy anything based on popularity.

My personal preference would be hand stops, but my wife uses the AFG and loves them on both of her rifles. She has less grip strength, which is why she needs to hold them differently than myself. I think it all comes down to personal preference. I tried many other methods, but they don't seem to work out as well, and I feel that I have less control with the support hand with an AFG than with standard hand stops.

What ever is comfortable or allows you to manipulate the weapon. This why the back rifle disease is so expensive, that's three types of avg, handstop, and rvg you have to buy and try.
