80% lower

for all you guys out there just want to know what is the law here in Calif. about the 80% lower is this legal to have here and to use in the range to shoot ie..public shooting range? thank you very much..

80% lower is considered a paperweight and should be legal everywhere in the US. Not sure how you're going to use it at the range though...hold down a stack of paper targets?, throw it down range?

A completed lower, made by yourself from an 80%, is legal to own and shoot, as long as the completed weapon doesn't have any illegal features (no full auto, bullet button if not featureless, etc...)

Yes it is legal as long as you are not a prohibitted person and you can legally own a firearm

It's legal. I see people all the time shooting their completed 80% ARs with the lower still in the white

I know its legal, but does anyone know where the law is written? I've heard all sorts of things on how many you are allowed to have. One person says "just one." Another person says "you can do 1 a year." Then somene else says "5 per year."

I think it would be nice to have a copy of the law so that if you are at your range and a LEO shows up you've maybe got a copy to show him/her. I only say that as I know of someone that was arrested for their un-numbered lower at a range in Yuba county. Granted it was dropped at the station, but I think it would suck just the same if you were to be arrested or even detained while dealing with it.

I have never heard about how many you can have. I heard 5 per year for selling guns. If you sell a lot the may think you are a dealer or something.

Laws don't say what you CAN do... There is no law that says you can't, and there is no law that says how many you can have. Trust me, you do not and will not have more than a bunch of people here do

To my knowledge its not written. And there is no "implicit deny" factor in our system of laws. Which means until legal precedence is established, its legal.

besides, how would the law apply to you if no one even knew you had oh lets say for kicks, 100 completed firearms from 80% lowers that don't require registration (unless you intend to distribute/sell which is an entirely different legal process/thread to be discussed on).

GCA of 1968 clarifies you can build your own gun as long as it is not a pen gun or in a formation that would be breaking any laws.

Well I took my ar pistol out today and its on a 80% lower I milled out and had no problems at the range. I was even asked by a guy in the lane next to me how it runs because he is looking at doing his first 80% soon. Had the range officer the time before that ask where I milled mine out and he was looking himself at milling a few lowers out as well. We had a funny talk about the bull&*%# laws in California. But to be safe I just keep a copy of the penal codes of why I'm legally in my right have it so if any Leo's happen to ask I just say here have a reading lesson on why its legal in California.

One thing though make sure to do the SSE rule on building a AR pistol. Start off with a zero mag sled and follow the legal guide lines and you should be straight.

I agree, I can't find anything that say you can or can not. I spoke with a guy again today that said "I have friends that are with the DOJ and or ATF, they say it's one one for life and it has to be #er and registered."
I told him, I'd like to see where that is in writting.
To that he told me he'd try to get a copy of the law.
Guess now I'll wait and see if he is able to produce something. I'll be sure to post what comes of this so we can all stay safe and legal.
