I used to have a Mini 30. Man, I loved it when I took it out of the box! It felt great...sturdy, nice balance, good-looking. I purchased it to keep with my self-imposed rule of never having only one gun to fire a particular caliber. I had purchased a Saiga and a bunch of ammo (steel case of course...why would someone spend the money on new US factory brass 7.62x39? I'd buy a .308 if I wanted to spend that kind of money on ammo...same price and availability but way more power, IMO.)

Anyway...I ignored all the negative reviews I read about the Mini30 and chose to listen to the one or two who said their Mini's were reliable and shot Russian ammo. Well, like I said, it felt great out of the box...and then I took it out to the range...and began a maddening two-month process of attempting to find the right ammo and magazine combination, hammer spring, proper cleaning/lubing technique, etc. It jammed more than any gun I have EVER owned (oh, except my 60 year old hand-me-down tube fed Ward's 22). It jammed on every magazine, every ammo I tried, every situation, every day! That Mini just about drove me crazy. I probably shot a total of around 400 rounds of 5 or 6 types of ammo. Just when I thought I had it figured out, it would start jamming again! Like I said, this went on for a couple months and I was beating my head against the wall trying to make this thing work......

Then I remembered my other 7.62 rifle that had been sitting in my safe the last two months. The unconverted, featureless, no bullet-button, never jams, perfect functioning, easy to clean, easy to maintain, half-the-price-of-a-Ruger, ugly-as-sin, no-ammo-too-cheap-for-it Saiga. Why was I spending tons of time, money, and mental energy trying to get this Mini 30 working?? So I went home, cleaned the Mini, took it to the gun shop and put it on consignment for around $100 less than what I paid for it. When it sold, I went and picked up the money and used it to purchase ammo and another 7.62x39 Saiga that happened to arrive that day. It was a good choice.

Had I read the OP's review first, I may have chosen to go a different direction, since I value the same stuff he does (function first, accuracy next, then everything else).

I had one for a long time. Never failed to fire and was dead reliable. I loved it dearly and one day got a wild hair up my ***** and sold it to get a O/U shotgun. I do miss it though.

This. The more I read, (and shoot) the more i think the SKS is one of the best rifle designs of the 20th century.

I sold my mini thirty years ago for $600, and bought an SKS M59 for $300 and spent the other $300 on ammo. I don't regret it at all.

OP - I think I may have PMd the prev owner for a trade (I know I PMd someone re: a mini 30 trade) but I just couldn't justify the mini for basically all the same reasons you pointed out. BTWm what range allowed you to shoot steel/bimetal jacket? Part of the reason I sold my Saiga was because I didnt know any ranges in SOCAL that allowed steel jacketed ammo.

Problem with the Mini 30 is its firing pin. Ruger decided to save on costs by using the same ones as the Mini 14. On the Perfect Union board, there is a whole thread listing brands of steel ammo that works. Its a shame, otherwise the Mini Thirty would be the perfect rifle for me.

I proved that to myself.
I had a mini-30 back in the early 90's. with brass cased US manufactured ammo, it was 100% reliable ammo wise.

Magazine wise, the factory 5 round and USA magazines (after market magazine company) 10 rounders were the only thing I found at the time to be 100% reliable.

the USA Magazine 30 rounds were ok for fun at the range, but I would NOT have bet my life on them.

Accuracy was ok. nothing to brag about and about what you describe.

Since you have it, I would give it another go with only US manufactured, brass case ammo, and either the factory 5 round or a good quality 10 round aftermarket to develop your benchmark before make any final decisions.

would I buy another one. Probably not. they don't interest me anymore.

After 4000+ rounds fired through my 581 series I can make the following observations:

                    1. All aftermarket mags for Ruger Mini-class rifles which I try are trash (even name brand mags) and work only problematically at best.

                    2. All Ruger factor mags run flawlessly and eliminated all my FTL; FTF; FTE issues.

                    3. Your mileage will vary.

good luck getting a new firing pin i had to send mine back to ruger and you better not have any aftermarket parts on there like a different handguard as to them their handguard has a little guide that is critical to the function of the firearm and you may get it back with the factory one installed and the other one removed

also any bridge type scope mounts may effect reliablility and are not recommended for use by ruger

For me it was 10 round mags and bullet buttons.

If I didn't live in California things may be different.

^ This. I have had my Mini 30 since 99 and the pro mag mags purchased along with it are crap. They work ok if not fully loaded. With brass cased ammo and factory mags, it's all good.

As a general rule, I don't shoot from a bench.
My point isn't that being able to hit a 10" plate at 100 yards is an unworthy goal for the shooter, only that it isn't a test of a rifle's accuracy. I have been shooting for 40 years and I have never ever seen a rifle that wouldn't shoot significantly better than 10MOA with even the worst mil surplus ammo. Certainly it can be challenging to hit a 10 inch plate while breathing hard and shooting quickly, but any rifle you test will be able to do it, so long as the shooter is up to the task. If you are going to rate accuracy, even if you are being very lenient, I would say that 3MOA is bottom of the barrel (no pun intended), even a Mini-14 will shoot that well. I think some POS AKs might not make the 3MOA mark when shooting crap ammo.

I take my dads mini 14 to the range all the time and it eats brass like their is no tomarrow. When I was younger I remember my dad running steel .223 threw it and it worked fine. Anyway I already own a 7.62x39 rifle but in Socal where you have to shoot brass 7.62x39 ammo at the range anyway it does not seem like a hinderance. Now shtf that is another story. As long as the mini 30 is still in production ruger will take care of you if anything happens to that rifle. I wish they still made the mini 6.8 though I really want to get into that caliber.
