So, I'm brainstorming again, and was wondering what people thought of this.
The way I envision it (which may or may not work) it would be a relatively simple DIY mod which would not prevent you from using detachable mags in a free state, but would allow you a tube fed AR-15. I have no idea what the capacity would be yet, but ideally the full 10 rounds we're allowed.
The tube would attach to a rail below the handguard similar to many other RIS accessories, and would be able to utilize both quick release and Allen key bolts. the tube would slide into a hole drilled into the front of the lower receiver, into the magwell, and would join with a sled insert which would position the round to be picked up by the bolt. When the tube is attached, the sled insert would be locked into place. The mechanism would hopefully be able to function with the same reliability of a standard removable magazine.
if the conversion were to be developed and marketed, a jig would be included(for drilling the hole into the magwell) which would attach to the front takedown pin.
What are your opinions?
Is there a market for such a device?
Any ideas and/or suggestions?
I may add a specific diagram of the mechanism if there's interest.
Edit: as for rounded tip ammunition, I'm sure we can sell plastic/rubber "ball" tips to stick to the front of our bullets so they don't blow up in the tube.
Or, as my brother suggested, insert them so that they "piggyback" at an angle instead of tip-to-primer. This would also allow for a shorter tube, if reliable feeding could be achieved.
