which 22 conversion?

If i want to get a 22 conversion for my Ar whats the best way to go? Get a complete upper? Will a Ciener kit work? will it damage my barrel??

I've fired thousands through my Ciener in both of my ARs. They work well.

If you're going to do the conversion kit, Ciener is the way to go.
I have the air force conversion kit, it's hit or miss and is ammo sensitive.

OK, Im sorry for being so persistant but I know i read somewhere that someone messed up their AR with a ciener kit... or am i imagining things? I just dont want to replace a 300+ barrel on my AR....

Clean the barrel before you go back to shooting .223. The worst you could get would be a little lead fouling.

It won't hurt your barrel, but shooting soft lead 22s may cause small shavings to build up in the gas block. Unless you are going to dedicate the barrel for 22s, you might want to stick to copper jacketed ammo.

The two largest problems with drop in units is:

1. Lead can build up in the gas block.

2. The twist rate of a .223 barrel will not stabilize a .22 rimfire.

In other words, unless it's dedicated, a conversion is not the best way to go. Yes, it WILL work, but there are better options out there.

Lead in the gas block can be cleaned. And after a few thousand rounds, I haven't seen a build up occur.

As far as stabilization, do you mean a 22lr will be "overstabilized?" Most 22lr's have a twist rate of 1 in 14 to 16. A 1 in 9 will spin them faster than needed. They will be stabilized and then some.

So if I have a Compass Lake (18" Douglas Heavy Contour Threaded Mid-Length + Gas Tube) will I need to get a seperate barrel as to not ruin that one? Or does it matter? Someone with expertise please tell me

The best drop in conversion is (in my experiance) the colt factory units.

They run very reliably.

They can be hard to find and expensive when you do find them, but they are well worth the extra.
