There's an SR-25 hanging around somewhere in my family-tree and it's a pretty accurate rifle. But while the SR-25 has a famous namesake, most of the reports I've read suggest that you could build a more accurate gas-gun for less money than you could get an SR-25 for.
If the idea is to build a .308 tack-driver, another option is to have a custom-shop, like GA Precision or Patriot Arms build you an upper. I've gotten quotes from both shops and their prices were competitive with the more accurate uppers sold by DPMS (like their SASS) or Armalite. And either shop will build an upper based on either design. And ... by going custom, you get to pick the components you'd prefer (though the price can start getting up there, depending on what you want).
I think GAP tends to use Bartlein barrels and Patriot tends to use Krieger; though I'm sure you could specify exactly what you want. Patriot is currently building a DPMS-based upper for me. Jered (the owner) is one heck of a nice guy and will talk with you at length about what you're trying to get out of the rifle. The turn-around times I got from both shops was 2-3 months (assuming you don't want hard-to-get parts).
And yes ..., my hats off to you, PIRATE14. To my thinking, you had a heavy hand in getting 308's into this god-forsaken place. I'm still waiting for that BB for my unassembled LAR-8, though.
I know ... I know ... TWO WEEKS!
