FIRST POST - AK Ammo problems

    Hi Cal Guns!
This is my very first post as a new member. I appreciate your time and input.

I recently got an AK-47 and had it thoroughly looked over by a trustworthy builder out of state who has built many AKs. He tested it and said it was great. I have only put about 50 rds through it up at Angeles Shooting Range. I had a couple of rounds bulge significantly on the base of the casing so I stopped shooting.

I have only shot Fiocchi ammo from this particular range so this is the only ammo I have had trouble with. I have only used one mag (a metal 10 rd) that I purchased new from Gun World in Burbank.
I noticed upon inspection that the mag is not properly pushing the rounds up. The follower is wobbly even when loaded and the rounds on the left side of the mag (when looking at it from behind) can rock front to back, causing the base of the shell to not be flush with the mag lip.

My builder is pretty sure it's bad ammo, as he put 300+ rds of 5 types of ammo through this gun from 6 different mags without one problem. Also, the brand new Fiocchi ammo from Angeles Shooting Range appears to be discolored on the upper portion of the brass.

I will go visit Jeff at American Gun Works and get his professional opinion but i am also looking for a good AK mechanic / gunsmith to look over everything. I hope it's just the mag, or bad ammo.

Sounds like a head space issue... Pics would help. Does your bolt fully close on a round?

I think the bolt is closing but I can't tell. I'm new to the AK world. I'll definitely check head spacing. Thanks.

Pics would help and I'd be way quicker to blame the "expert" builder than ammo..

And I'm assuming the "discoloration" is heat treated case mouths.

I'm pretty close to burbank. Would be happy to give it a look. Bulging cases is never a good sign. Can you post some pictures of your spent brass.

What kind of magazine have you got? There are a bunch of chinese 10 rounders floating about that aren't worth their weight in scrap metal.

I've found the fiocchi ammo to be decent quality. And the brass to be good for reloading. I'm guessing the "discoloration" on your new brass is the annealing that was done when it was manufactured. This is normal and desirable. Your discolored cases probably look something like these. Right?

Hi guys thanks for the feedback. I don't want to throw anyone under the bus. If there is a pro AK guy near Burbank I can bring my gun.
I would love to post a pic, but just learning this forum stuff and it looks like I can only insert a URL, not an attachment.

The mag mfgr is unknown. No marking. Got it new from Gun World in Burbank and it was in a plastic bag with no label.

Yes, the brass looks like the pic above. I would be glad to post a pic if I can. Thanks

Ok let's see if this works. Here's a photo of the bulged casing.

I'm trying to post pics but I'm not any good. Here are some more links to pics:

Notice the groove on the base of the casing.
When I snap a fresh round into the (brand new) bolt, it wiggles a bit. Is it supposed to be tight? Head space was checked and seemed tight.

The only problems I've had regarding AKs and ammo, is finding it at a good price (as of lately)
The Marines have landed, and the situation is well at hand.

When you say wiggles a bit, how much do you think a bit is? You should have very little movement when that bolt is turned and locked up. From the looks of that case, you have a severe headspace problem.

Out of curiosity what happens when you throw .223 out of an AK? I know the casing of the .223 expands. What happens to the rifle? Any damage?

Yeeeahh, I'd stop shooting that gun for a while until you verify that headspace and chamber are good. Take it to a real gunsmith and have them give it a once over. Better to spend a little $ to be safe than getting a face full of metal bits if something fails.
