Here is a pic of a 450 Marlin rifle.

As for what it is it good for? Anything that smaller calibers arent : )

In all honesty, I bought mine for a pig gun. Some nasty stuff happened, so still havent been able to get out and use it. Great caliber to reload for, lots of versatility in the caliber. Load up some 300-350 grain soft points for deer, then bump up to the 405-430+ for pigs or bear.
If you dont stop showing me that picture Z!!!!! Ironically, I was looking for one about 10 minutes ago. I just cant find one locally I'm still debating on 30-30 or 45/70 since I don't reload yet.

It'll wildly bore a hole right through a wild boar.

I was like you I was always curious and after I shot one I wanted it badly.
I got mine last year a Marlin 1895.
With the Remington factory 405 grain bullets it does not kick badly kind of like a 12 gauge.
With the Lever Revolutions it kicks like an angry Mule on Steriods.
Put on a Pachmayer decelerator pad and now it is sweet again.
Lots of info on the Marlin Owners Forum.
There are a lot of cheap mods you can do to make it smooth as butter.
A little 600 grit sand paper and some elbow grease is all it takes and a set of springs for about $31.00 bucks.
                Well worth it.

What is it used for? ..... Hurling HUGE chunks of lead at anything you think needs it! They are a blast to shoot. Since you load you can do reduced recoil loads, I used 28.5 gr h4198 with a 405gr LFP. accurate and light recoil. I have a marlin 1895 and I love it!

Had a super nice guide gun in 45-70 shot 500gr loads and it was punishing. Didn't take it to Alaska with me. I just sold it and bought a 375 ruger with a 18" barrel. Why?
Alot more useful for me. I can mount my 1-5 scope close to stock, have back up irons on it. I will shoot the 300gr bullets. For my uses when I visit my bestie in Alaska it's perfect.
