I have had the AK-74 East German Brake mounted on my 7.62 X 39 for a bit over a year now, with Zero bullet strikes or any other issues out of about 400 Rounds fired through it.

IMHO, out of all the AK74 Brakes, the East German version from RTG is the Best one for the money..The Fit and Finish is superb. And the Pics don't do it justice.

Anybody try the spikes dynacomp on a AK yet? Seems comparable to a battle comp at a fraction of the price. The California Moderate Centrist Militia member in exile

I bought it several years ago when I first started hosting build parties. Here's an old picture of it:
It is US made. I don't see it listed right now but, it is similar to this: http://www.k-var.com/shop/AK-351.html . All of my testing of AK brakes has been shooting my AMD65 pistol with one hand off a rifle front rest whith a 3" bag (so it wasn't tight in the rest, just sitting on it). I've a cheap SOB so, I've never bought an AK brake for more than $25.
In the end, the slant brake will probably fit your needs the best since it doesn't divert sound sideways or rearward.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

That was my question. The 74 type brakes only really work if they have the 24mm base, they need that area for the expansion chamber.
The best one i've shot is the battle comp, that's on a 30 cal with a 14mm muzzle. Next to that it's hard to beat the 74 brake. There are 3 kinds of people in this world.
The wise, learn from the mistakes of others.
The smart, learn from their own mistakes.
The others, well......they just never learn.

This is True; however...
You can use the AK-74 Brake on a 7.62 X 39 AKM by installing a $10 adapter < 14 X 1mm (LH) to 24mm (RH) > , as sold by AK-Builder, APEX and others:

From the AK-Builder site:
"This adapter fits on the end of a standard 14-1LH threaded AK muzzle and adapts it up to the modern Russian 24mm thread design. With this adapter, you can use AK74 type muzzle devices with 24mm threads. Has notches for detent locking pin."
AK-Builder manufactures professional AK-47 and AK-74 building tools, riveting tools, barrel tools, jigs, fixtures, gunsmithing tools, parts and accessories.
The Adapter allows for the expansion chamber to do its work as intended...

haven't cut the sleeve off yet so i don't know if it may already be threaded underneath. if it isn't, then i was going to thread it to 24mm as there seem to be more brakes available at that size but i guess any thread size is only $10 away with an adapter.Comment

u cant tread it to 24mm only 14.. if u want 24mm tread u will need a ak74 style 24mm FSBFS/FT HI-POINT 9MM CARBINE 995TS http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s....php?t=1269230Comment

so i cut off the barrel sleeve this morning and the barrel was factory threaded! LH for sure, and i imagine they are 14x1mm threads.
for the east german 74 style brake, are those 24x1.5RH? or are there other sizes for 24mm threads, ie 1mmLH or RH, 1.5mm LH, etc. all adapters i have seen online simply say 24mm, leading me to believe that most devices will be the same.Comment
