The Registry was closed. You can not register aws anymore. Proving you owned the gun before the ban only proves you did not register it as an aw

I thought it was called "Constructive Intent" Generally speaking, Brakes/Comps have Vertical Slots, Flash Hiders Horizontal. I would remove the threaded device & install a Thread Protector.

If your not sure, including the Trunk thing, dont do it. Some People, including Cops see right through ANY uncertainty or doubts.
Yes I took the pic, no I didn't go swimming!

This thread is like a fail factory working overtime

I see that the: "possession prior to 1999" bs has already been addressed. there is a "Flowcharts & OLL Assembly Guide" at the top(ish) of every page. It covers this stuff in detail.

you are probably thinking of federal NFA stuffs. There is no "constructive" for CA AW laws

Seriously? You need to do more research before you post that much wrong information.
Registeing does not matter. It is not named and is only an assault weapon because of its featues.
Change to a muzzle brake and you can drive around with it all you want in the trunk.

question 14. I want to keep my assault weapon defined by characteristics (PC section 12276.1, SB 23). What am I required to do?

If you are still in possession of an unregistered assault weapon, you may not keep it. Your only option is to relinquish it to a law enforcement agency.
question 16. If I did not register my assault weapon by the registration deadline, is there any way I can legally keep it?

No. If you did not register your assault weapon prior to the registration deadline, you must relinquish that assault weapon to a law enforcement agency. Failure to relinquish your unregistered assault weapon could result in arrest and a felony conviction.

Seriously, read the post. I said AW. Yes, you can change it and all is well. Still doesnt mean that you can drive around with it in your trunk as a permanent fixture. Feel free to drive around with it if you like.

Quote me the PC where it says you can not drive around with a non-aw in your trunk.

Let me be clear, and I'm sure at some point one of our more learned members (Librarian comes to mind), but

YOU CAN NO LONGER REGISTER ASSAULT WEAPONS AS DEFINED BY LAW IN CALIFORNIA. IT DOES NOT MATTER WHEN OR HOW YOU OBTAINED THEM.

TheHammerOfTruth is WRONG on this point. There was a grace period that expired many years ago for owners of these weapons that had obtained them prior to the ban taking effect. I don't recall how long exactly, less than a year if I recall correctly but in any case it was what 10+ years ago now? So moot point on when.

You also cannot travel through California on your way to another state with a gun that is an "assault weapon" as defined by state law.

Oh and be sure you do something about your magazines that can take more than 10 rounds, disassemble them or don't bring them in. You would be importing into the state regardless of when or how you legally obtained them in another state.

As for the keeping of weapons in the trunk of your car as a matter of course, there is no state law against doing so EXCEPT in the case of registered assault weapons.

Nice use of color. Doesnt make you any more correct.
Again, if you doubt me, contact the DOJ and ask specifically about an AW that you owned prior to the ban (and have your receipt, registration and 4473)and the fact that you are moving in to the state. They will allow you to bring it in and register it.
