    80% lower help

    Greetings calgunners,

After doing a fair amount of reading, I have decided to begin an 80% AR build. To me, there's not much fun in pulling an AR off a shelf and making it mine - plus, it's out of my budget. So I went ahead and purchased a TM, 80% lower. The predicament: though I'm legally old enough to own a long arm, I'm not old enough to attend the awesome build parties being hosted in SJ . I'm trying to avoid buying a jig and drill press. I need help! Any of the following responses to my situation would be welcomed (though I prefer the first).

1." I have all the tools you need to finish the job, come on over kid".

    2. " you can borrow my jig just don't screw it up..... kid".

    3. "Quit being so impatient, save up and buy one off the shelf kid".

4." just have your mommy or daddy buy a stripped lower and have it transferred to you".

    5. "Throw your 80% lower in the back of the shed and wait till you're 21 kid"

    Wing it! no...
Do you have a drill press or access to one?
My understanding is that you can use another lower to figure out where to drill the holes, so do you know anyone with an AR?
Second thought: option 5. The upper is going to be about $450+ right? Why not wait, take your time?

Yes I have access to a drill press, but if I go that route i'd rather be safe and use a jig.
I'd rather exhaust all other options, before resorting to #5.

Do the build parties ask for ID? I would think building your own weapon would trump the 21 year rule

That's what I thought, but I guess DST is just playing it safe by keeping their build parties 21 and +. Im not sure if they card anyone, but I don't intend to violate any of their policies and ruin my chances of ever attending a DST build party in the future.

Yes, they check ID. My guess at their reasoning for the 21+ is that any lower milled out in their shop has the potential to become either a rifle or a pistol. And you may be old enough to own a long gun but you aren't legal for a pistol yet.

One option you might consider is buying the jig and using it, then resell it for near what you bought it for. Seems they aren't always in stock so I'm sure you can sell it pretty easy after you're done with it.

I'm assuming he meant under 21 years of age, not under 21 inches.

Age of 21 not 21" he says e can't attend a bp because he's not a legal age to build one but as far as I know you have to be 18 to build a fire arm pistol or rifle or other. Have to be 21 to buy them from anyone tho

I did mine at 19, on a friend's mill. I think that its a great project to start out on, and will give you an intimate knowledge of how the gun works. If you want "papers" for it, theres a link in my sig you might find useful...

Also, if at all possible, do a single shot exemption on it, so that you can use it to build a pistol OR a rifle. You don't have to be 21 to build an AR pistol, and there's no registration. Then, later, you can use it for either, without running into SBR regs. Just don't put a stock on it when you have a pistol upper on it.

My AR is 7.62x39, so that if/when we get invaded, I can shoot their ammo back at them!

I do not know the legalities or the build party rules, so this is a question as much as anything else...

If say, dad is in the picture (ie, you live at home or local), it seems like most build parties allow an observer to attend with the builder. Could dad be the one manipulating the CNC (builder) with you as the observer? I know under normal circumstances you have to be the "manufacturer", but, aren't there laws regarding "family transfers" of firearms

Again, I don't know the answer... Just asking.
