You want to look through the optic and focus on your target. The reticule should not be your point of focus. This way, the reticule actually appears over your target and appears clear. If you're seeing dots comprising a circle, you're doing it wrong.
Putting holographic and red dots further away from your eyeball aids in this. Hopefully in the next 10 years or so some smart guy will figure out a holographic sight replacement for the frontsight post, so we can get rid of the stupid lump on top of the rifle.
