    Looking for a 24" upper

    Hey everyone.

I just got an M-223 scope for my AR and I'd like to buy a 24" upper for it so I can keep my Eotech on my 16" and swap out the upper with the M-223 for long range shooting.

Here is the question...the M-223 has an elevation adjustment for a 55gr .223 round for 100-600 yards. Id like to use this adjustment to its fullest capability so id like to shoot a 55gr bullet. From my research, I see that a 1:9 twist is best for 55gr but I am having trouble finding a long barrel 1:9 twist.

Can you guys help out? I'm thinking longer is better so a 24" complete upper in 1:9 twist would be nice. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Go with Stag's 6H in 1/8 that will work great with 55gr as well as 62gr.

Thanks for the reply. Do you know if a bipod can go on a 6h?

I looked everywhere for a 24" upper and finally just build my own. I got my barrel from blackholeweaponry. If your not in the position to build your own I would recommend the Stag, I love my Stag.

My heavy barrel Bushys shoot 55 grains pretty good (1/8 twist).

What about a bipod on the WOA?

Thanks for all replies. I'm liking the Stag as well...especially because I have a stag model 3 lower

It'll take standard handstops so I bet you could adapt a bipod to mount on the float tube. I don't really know why you would want one on an AR though. It really depends on what you want to do with it.

Strictly for shooting tight groups on paper on a bench. I have a 16" upper with a Eotech when I want to play Rambo.

Bipods are a sort of 1/100 use item. There is almost always something better than a bipod for the purpose, and if you are on a bench then there is always something better than a bipod.

But the AR isn't really a very good bench gun. I know, you already have a lower but a good accurate 24" upper is $650. You could buy a more accurate bolt gun for that.

I had a 24" bull barrel from RRA: very solid and quality parts. I ordered it just after christmas and it took about 3 months to get to me though.

I got a stainless fluted 24" in 1:8 and I get fantastic results with 55gr rounds so it opens up more options for you. I would settle on 1:9 or 1:8, either one will do.

The Stag or RRA upper is a great option if you want to keep the cost down a little.

If I knew who made my barrel id buy another, it may have been Citadel...

I’ve been looking at blackholeweaponry as well; I plan on getting my next barrel from them for an 18” SPR style build.

White Oaks has been recommended a lot, but I never personally used one.

My original plan for my target rifle was to get a Stag upper, but when I came across the barrel I have now, I ended up building the upper myself and I’m glad I did. If I had to do it again, I would build it myself with the components I want.

GL on your search, my 24” target AR with a 4-16x50 optic gets more love than my carbine right now. Its very accurate and fun to shoot. What power is your M-223 Nikon?
