Help settle a debate - re: BUIs, beveling, and which way they face.

I've only ever used Matech BUIs before in the military, which are made with the bevel facing the shooter.

    See this picture here:

A friend of mine just bought a BCM upper with Troy BUIs, and I commented on how his sights were mounted backwards. His came from the shop with the bevel facing OUT, flat side towards the shooter. Troy's webpage shows the same thing. Additionally, the night-time (larger) aperture is the default sight when you do flip it up, as it's impossible (due to the design) to fold it down with the day-time sight selected. Check out troy's video here:

At 1:49 you can clearly see their sight mounted with the bevel out, and the shooter looking through the night-time aperture.

Now I'm confused. Which direction is the bevel SUPPOSED to face?

They are mounted correctly in the video. If that is how your friend has them mounted, then they are good to go. Yes with the smaller aperture the sight cannot be folded down completely, that is just the design.

I have no input in the matter, but I must say this:

For those of us trying to follow at home, is this correct?

This is the side that should face the shooter:

This side should not face the shooter:

^ Makes sense, the writing is on the side that should face the shooter.

In addition to the sight markings, the windage adjustment should work properly. If it's mounted backwards that wont be right.

this should be common sense - why would the marking face away from shooter? *the cross hatches, not the writing (the writing doesnt matter at all).

The large aperture is used for 0-200m and the small aperture is used for 200m+. Could it be that imminent threats are usually close so the large aperture is the default?

On the Troy's it's bevel facing the muzzle.

How about folding front sights - should they fold towards the user, or away?

I have a few of the Troy sites. They all fold AWAY from the Muzzle. The front and the rear.

Found another pic of troy sights, this one on BravoCo's site - this one, if folding towards the user, would be with the bevel also facing the user:

The bevel goes towards the muzzle. This is the side that says "folding battle sight" on it.

If that's the way it's shown in troy's pictures and video, I don't see why the confusion.

If it bothers you so much, just pull it apart and flip the apertures so it'll fold down with the small aperture in use. I did it on mine, relatively easy and doesn't change how it functions as far as adjustments go.
