Buy any lower locally and then get the best upper you can afford online.

You could always get a complete lower and complete upper then put them together. BCM would be my vote for the upper.

I've also owned a few complete Stag rifles that I was very happy with.

Why not just buy a Colt?

It's hard to beat the pony for $999. It's not really any more expensive than any of the other brands and it's a Colt. It's a 16-inch on a carbine gas system but people don't seem to have problems with the 6920 so I doubt you will.

LMT, DD, STAG, NOVESKE, BCM. Depends on your budget. A lot of good choices, can't go wrong with any of them.

LMT MRP -- you can get it in 5.56 DI, then upgrade with barrel and BCG to 5.56 piston. 6.8 SPC, 6.8 SPC Piston, 204 ruger and who knows what they'll have this year…

You are right, a CA legal Colt for under $1K is hard to resist.

                              BCM/DD/Noveske area also excellent options.

I would hope you own a Noveske but the reason I posted that line is that is what usually happens and these same threads pop up every week.
