Not really because now the AK 74 is gaining popularity. Its funny how the AK platform is going to a round similar to the 5.56, and now we're trying to come up with a round similar to the 7.62x39. Its really quite silly.

        Not really.

The 5.45 is designed to yaw, whilest the 5.56 yaws and then frags.

I've shot rabbits with both 5.45 and 5.56 fmj. The 5.45 punched relatively clean holes (I shot that rabbit like 10 times and it still was alive) through the rabbit and the 5.56 makes them explode. It was as if the rabbits got hit with a lightning bolt.

And with 7.62x39 I had similar through-and-through results with little damage, just like with the 5.45.

Again, if any of you doubt the 5.56, please look here

Did you really have to start a thread on this subject?

If SHTF and you are in an urban combat situation both would be accurate shooting at man size targets inside 300 yards. I first got a 556 M4 and love it but I would grab my AK if I can only have one. More knock down power and I won't have to worry about maintence.

Change your mind about what? The 7.62 hands down is the best choice. Comparing the two is kind of ridiculous...the .223/5.56 is very good, as far as .22s go..

If you want close to mid-range, get x39, anything past that get x51, or just get x51 for everything:-)

The reliability and your skill/comfort level with your gun is probably more important than cartridge choice between the two. Both cartridges have been used to great effect worldwide for decades.

If things went bad enough to where I needed a rifle, I personally would be grabbing a 7.62x39. That's not because I think the cartridge is better though.... Its because my AK has been so insanely reliable for me (4,000 rounds through it, with the only jams being when I tested a couple new cheap plastic mags, otherwise never ever a jam) and the thing just fits me like a glove.

I have a couple AR's that I like a lot. I like the lighter weight of the .223/5.56 for carrying more, but I just don't think I'm quite as in the zone as when I have my AK.

                    Personal opinion:

The 5.56 and 5.45mm are better assault rifle calibers than the 7.62.

The 7.62x39 Soviet is a lot like the 8mm Kurz in the sense that they retained the large .30 of their battle rifles, but cut down the length of the casing that holds the powder. So now you have something that recoils less than a full powered 8mm Mauser or 7.62x54R, but the BC is still the same or worse.

Downsizing the diameter of the bullet to better compliment the reduced powder charge makes for a more efficient cartridge with a better ballistic coeffecient.
