I would suggest a Loaded model or a used Polytech m14s. The Poly is chinese but sports a forged receiver that is GI spec unlike all of springfield's cast non GI spec. The poly is also about 1k used, sometimes less if you do look around. The perk of a Springfield is that it is new and has a lifetime warranty. Lord knows I have had to use it on a non M1a rifle but it sure is a great peace of mind. The loaded will run you about 2k, everything said and done. The standard M1a is only 200 bucks cheaper and lacks the NM barrel, trigger and front sight. Well worth the 200 dollar difference IMO.

Springfield M1a is a great choice in that price range.

Or, starting at $600, a CMP M1 Garand is an awesome rifle. I'm surprised no one even mentioned it. And it is a BATTLE rifle.

No disrespect to the AR's. I have one in .223. Very accurate, and fun to shoot. But .308 or .30-06 have way more ballistics out past 300 yards.

Without the lifetime warranty, Springfield would be out of business.

The Polytech is superior in both materials and workmanship. Aftermarket parts designed for the M14 actually fit the Polytech.

LOL. No doubt. I too believe it is a better and cheaper product but I am very pleased with my M1a loaded and it hasn't given me any grief thus far. Time will tell...

A .308 AR can be had for around $1400, and there are many more manufacturers if DPMS doesn't float your boat.
