I own a few Mosin Nagant variants and they vary all over the place as far as accuracy at 100yds and 200 yds. My friend just got one and he tried it for the first time at the 200 yrd range in Metcalf, San Jose. Using corrosive surplus ammo, he shot a few rounds in a 5 inch group. I know you guys are talking about 1000 yrds, but this particular rifle shot very well dead stock. It was the first one I have seen that I actually had to adjust the rear site UP!!!

I guess with proper preparation, it may be possible to shoot well at 1000 yrds.

I got 1 hit in 5 on a 10 inch plate out of a Finn Sniper at 600yds once. My friend who owned the gun said he got 2 in 5 at 800yds out of the gun. I think I will keep my 300Win Mag. Not saying it is impossible but sure is easier with a new gun.

I was banging my 12"X24" steel target last week @700y with my MWS. Way to easy with my hand loads. So my buddy pulled out his Mosin with 4X scope and couldn't come even close. Each shot was around 7-12' off the target. There was wind, but every shot was nowhere in the consistency department. I sent about 10 rounds down with the same results. Possible, sure. But not very plausible with a basic set up.

Some of the longest recorded shot in history were taken with that rifle/cartridge. The biggest thing is whether you have a good one or not.

It would still be going over 700 FPS at 2000 yards, assuming 150gr ball. That is more than a .38 special at the muzzle.

I wouldn't want to be shot with one.

I shot one of the Vintage Military Long Range Rifle matches at Sac Valley this summer with a Mosin Sniper repro and surplus ammo. The rifle did fine out to 800 yards. With better ammo I wouldn't be afraid to shoot it to 1000.

And a person is about 24" wide and generally much taller. A 31" circle on me covers my entire torso from crotch to chin, with a small area, about 3" on each side of my elbows open. I am not going to do the math, (plus I don't remember how ) but I would bet easily 8 out of 10 hits in that 31" circle would hit meat.

That is plenty accurate for the intended use.

Depending on what type of 1000 yard shooting your friend wants to do, it is very possible. The scoring ring sizes on the 1000 yard LR target are pretty generous:

                NRA No. LR--
                Aiming Black-(inches)
                X ring--------10.00
                10 ring-------20.00
                9 ring--------30.00
                8 ring--------44.00

                Rings in White-(inches)
                7 ring---------60.00
                6 area--------72x72 square

It is possible to clean a 1000 yard match with a 2 MOA rifle.

Well, during WW1 it was reported that the Marines were hitting and killing German troops at 800 yards with M1903 Springfields during the Battle of Belleau Wood.

I bet hitting 1K with a scoped rifle would be significantly easier.
