1,000 Yard Mosin

Friend of mine at work was talking about mounting a scope on his Mosin for the purpose of 1,000 yard matches. I told him he was crazy, but then got to thinking about it and figured that I would ask here.

Possible? Plausible? Effective? Accurate Enough? Leave that rifle alone Bubba?

The iron sights go that high.............................I am pretty sure I will hit a two foot square plate with my 91/30 at 400 yards 80% of the time, with ammo a woman long dead wrapped up for me.

Encourage him to do it, and don't believe anything he says without being there.

He swears that it is an extremely accurate platform as is. I have never seen any targets though.

So the round/rifle combo is capable of that range?

The only remaining question is the level of accuracy?

Is there such a thing as Russian National Match type ammo available?

We had to set down in some remote part of Kuwait. We got the attention of some herders who started firing an AK at us. It was more funny then anything because he is like 1500 yards away and firing from the hip. We can see him with binoculars all peeved at us screaming... then an old man with a 91/30 shows up... we are not laughing any more.... we got two M16A2s without glass... he got 4 or 5 shots off before we were able to lift off and they were very close. The impacts into the road in front of us was easily seen.

Not the same things. The rifles are capable of surprising accuracy, but like I and elvensoul said, if you aren't there, don't necessarily believe it.

But trust me that's hardly a 91/30. They had a lot of work and tuning done to it. So tell your friend he better be willing to open up his wallet a little. But yes it is possible.

I had a magazine article that was testing all of the WW2 sniper rifles German,American,British and Russian. The only rifle that consistantly hit a gong at 1K yds was the Mosin. None of the other rifles tested could even come close.

He will need a good barrel, the easiest way there is a Walther Mosin blank or one of the UK59 barrels you can buy. Then he will need a scope mount, a bent bolt body and a decent scope. Add a Timney trigger and free float it in a decent stock and he might have a chance at hitting 6'x6' targets at 1,000 yards.

He will probably need hand loads with Lapua bullets to get there too.
