After more research, I'm leaning towards the PTR-32. It takes the AK47 magsComment

I have a 91F and it's a fun rifle. Quite accurate with iron sights, great cool factor, and it's a big battle rifle. I wouldn't call it state of the art...it's front-heavy, the charging handle is a pain (except that you get to do the "HK slap") and it doesn't hold the bolt open. But hey, it's got character.
Mine is a few years old and it came with HK bolt and carrier if that matters.Comment

next to the some of the bigotry and partisan political dribble the pops up here that is probably one of the most ignorant statements I have read on this board.
On top of the already mentioned AR15 and 1911 example
Are you aware that the vast numbers of G3 and FAL pattern rifles implemented by actual government military units are clones by definition?
What about AK patterns? Do you think Russia supplied the entire Soviet Union with rifles by themselves?
Are you aware of how many different companies have and continue to make the M16 and M4 pattern for our military? How many different companies produced the 03, the Garand, the 1919 etc etc etc
In this specific case have you ever seen how simple a Hk91/G3 pattern rifle is? Do not get me wrong, I love Hk (Im not sure why actually...) but there is no secret sauce they have when it comes to this platform. We are talking about a rifle that is twice as old as most of the people who post on this board! The California Moderate Centrist Militia member in exile

Really? How does this help the OP with his question? Most of the AR, AK, FALs etc are all clones or knock offs... I have my fair share of genuine HK firearms but to knock what is a very good clone of the HK-91 just for being a clone is a bit much. Not everybody can afford an HK-911 and be able to eat.
The PTR is a great firearm. For the price, it can't be beat as far as a .308 battle rifle. Mine eats whatever 308 ammo I have and I haven't had any issues thus far.

Funniest thing about Norseman's comment is that PTR rifles are made on actual H&K tooling; not reverse-engineered, not eye-balled and best-guesses, but legit H&K tooling. They seem to be pretty good except for a trunnion issue that came up I believe.

FWIW, There are no clones better than what H&K or the Springfield Armory company produced with the SAR 3, and SAR 8.
The H&K is the original.
The SAR's are made by Springfield Armory, on H&K machines, using H&K parts, and was a contracted agreement by the H&K & SA companies.
Both are interchangeable, and have the same roller block actions, etc, etc.
PTR-91's are nice, but the above are better IMO.
If the H&K is not available to you, The SAR's are not banned in Ca, and retain all the quality that a 'real' H&K rifle has.

I really like these PTR91's, even though I don't know much about the H&K rifle's history. I'm practically in love with the DSA FAL's so I don't know which one I would buy first. Eh, would probably end up with both haha. Maybe I'll go play around with one at Turners' just to get familiar with them.R.I.P. First, a question for nikonuser. How did you attach the bipod to the hk handguard? I've been trying to find the hk bipods at a reasonable price but haven't been able to find any. Any instruction would be helpful. Thanks.I have a PTR91F that I have fired less than 500 rounds through it. It has a Trijicon 3-9X with the BAC reticle, Larue mount and the HK picattiny mount. I am not really selling it but PM me a price I cannot refuse and I might let go of it. I am in the Bay Area. I still have the original metal handguard if you prefer to use that one instead.

As for the concerns about quality. I've had my PTR-91F for over a year now, and I love it. I've had no feeding issues and the gun is far more accurate than I am. It's a solidly built gun.

I have 2 current issue PTR91 rifles and both work very well. The accuracy is on par with most other battle rifles. In the past I owned several of the original HK91 rifles and the fit and finish of the PTR91 (welds, finish...) is every bit as good. The original was made as a military battle weapon and looked it. The current PTR shouldn't be confused with any CAI, bad shop built or one of also ran copies. They are really made from quality parts and the receivers are stamped on original HK dies. They have come a long way.
If you want to feed crummy surplus ammo get one with a serial # above AW8000 (current new production). Thats about when they went back to the deep original type chamber flutes. The green/park retro mill one also has the better fluted chamber. Not that the earlier ones are bad, they tend not to like some surplus ammo.Comment
