Would a 13" length handguard rail work with a 16" mid-length gas system upper? I am planning to build a 16" middy and got a handguard designed for a delta & A2 gas block.

Handguard question...

I don't think a 13" handguard would work with a mid-length gas system. I believe the mid-length gas system is around 9" long. The handguard would be too long. The only thing you can do is put a low profile gas block instead of the A2 gas block and then install the 13" handguard. -
Thanks AeroEngi...I was thinking about that installing a low pro gas block but then again how would I secure the front end of the handguard so it wouldn't move or open up. I can't get away with the delta ring since that will be the main clamp. I jump the gun on the handguard thinking I can make it work like a free float. Can anyone add more input on my inquiry? You are the architect of your fate...and sometimes the fate of others.Comment

Can you somehow add some set screws to secure the handguard at the delta ring? I have a Daniel Defense Omega handguard and it has set screws at the delta ring and free floated at the forward end. This setup keeps it nice and solid.
How did you machine the handguard? Some pics would be great!Comment

These are all conjectures at this time...not sure if what is in my mind would work. I just want to work this railed handguard to what I am about to build. My only concern is how to secure it so it will be solidly attached to the barrel. I don't know yet if I can add screws at the delta ring. Anyhow I just want to get some ideas in case anyone has dealt with this setup before...if its a pain then I got no choice but to sell it.You are the architect of your fate...and sometimes the fate of others.Comment

Who's 13" rail. Ones like the TRX come with their own barrel nuts.
Set screws into a delta ring is not a good idea to me. Secure a rail per their instructions.Last edited by Nathan Krynn; 08-26-2011, 3:01 PM.Comment

That's how my Daniel Defense Omega 7.0 handguard is. The end of the handguard get clamped into the delta ring and there are 4 set screws that secure it as a free floated handguard (no wobbling or looseness). After about 1200 rounds, it's still rock solid.Comment

Nathan,
It's a KAC handguard rail but I assumed it's an old model....I don't see any similarities on the current KAC website list of handguard rails. Like it was discussed above, the approach on how it will be secured on the front end is the query since it will not work on a 16" middy using an A2 gas block so the solution is to go lo-pro. Now I was thinking, to secure the front end would be a cap and another clamp-on block. I stand corrected that the delta ring will not hold the handguard by itself tightly. I believed this handguard rail was for a delta & A2 block rifle length config. so the dilemma. Budget is so tight to make a detour besides I like how the KAC looks like.

A 13" handguard should be a free float handguard. A regular rifle length handguard is 12". Free float handguards are not secured in the front. They float.Using gun control to stop crime is like trying to put out a fire with gasoline!
You don't have to get permission to exercise a RIGHT. If you have to get permission or can be told no by the government it is no longer a right. IT IS A PRIVILEGE!
