School Me On AR Buffer & Spring

I dont know what kind I have now but when I shoot one round it does not catch the next one, it does eject the first one which leads me to believe the bolt assembly does not go back far enough. What is the lightest spring and buffer I can put? Also is there a negative for using a light buffer and spring? Which one (weight/side) should I get?

I have tried many kinds of ammo grains and I get the same result from all. I am using a CMMG 5.56 Upper with 20" barrel. Everything is cleaned, oiled, gas tube is cleaned as well.

I want to put a WTB ad but dont know which spring/buffer to ask for.

JP makes some lightweight rifle length buffers.

I assume you have a fixed stock.

If so, you probably have a standard rifle buffer and if so, your rifle is under gassed.

The real solution is to change your ammo or gas port.

Someone recently had a similar problem where the buffer tube was 1/2 inch or 3/8 inch too short on the inside. It was not letting the BCG go far enough back. Maybe you have the same problem.

Search for short-stroke.

I know it may be stupid question... but you are running a carbine buffer in your carbine buffer tube, right. If you are who manufactured your tube and buffer? If you're going to weight your buffer, here's a good start:



When it comes to buffer, my rule of thumb to get the heaviest buffer you can run with good major manufactured spring (Wolff, Brownells, Vltor, etc) which gives you 100% functions without bolt bounce or short stroking.

It's just trial and error...

Ok I was at the zombie shoot and took apart the gas block and and cleaned and after putting everything back together I shot about 200 rounds with out a problem thanks. For every ones help.
I guess it wasn't the buffer or spring to start with.

Glad to hear you got it solved. One school of thought in diagnosing a problem. (1) Did the problem always exist when the rifle was new, (2) did the problem occur after to modified the rifle or (3) did this start to happen gradually on its own after several trips to the range. If it’s 1 or 2 then I would say the problem could be related to mismatched parts. Most likely is it’s #3, it could be contributed to cleaning or worn parts. In either case, if you had gone to a lighter buffer yes it would have solved the problem but only for a short time. In fact the short stroke problem was due to being under gassed and it was fixed.

bought the upper complete used and the gas block was the only thing I did not take apart till this shoot.
