I would say to start by bore-sighting the new scope with a laser bore sight that slips into the barrel.

What ever ammo you choose can then go to "sighting in" instead of getting on paper.

If you live close. I will walk you through the sighting in procedure.

It is typically a cake walk on a bolt gun. I have bags and rests just for such an occasion.
And I have a bunch of Lapua brass reloads with scenars and BR primers to get you on paper at 100.

PM me if you are anywhere close to the OC. (Within a hundred miles)

        Cheers,
        Twystd1

I am not a precision shooter but I don't have a bolt I have a 308 AR. I have shot the 147 grain prvi stuff and was able to explode water bottles at 100 yds and plink a 6" steel plate at 200 yds. I care more about having fun than precision and I can't have fun at 1 dollar a round

I did how ever pick up 100 rds of 168 match prvi. I have not shot it yet but some day soon.

Unless you already have a laser boresighter, it's pointless for a rifle like the OP has. All he needs to do is put it on sandbags, take the bolt out and look down the bore at a 25 yard target then adjust the scope. If that doesn't get you on the paper, then there is a serious malfunction somewhere.

Lots of good suggestions. Thanks all, I really appreciate the inputs!

Twystd1, I may just take you up on that! Rifle is shipping....ten days...I'm thinking I may have the thing about the 22nd/23rd.

I'd buy a box of multiple different types and see what shoots best and what I would consider acceptable and go from there. Only real way of seeing what your gun like to spit out anyways.

Between my brother and I, probably about 200 rounds of the 168 and 175. I don't know what the rate of odd fliers is, but probably something close to 1 or 2 out of 10 (we do 10 round groups).

There's been other reports of people having similar issues with PRVI 308. It's not made to the same quality of the 223 stuff.

OP, what are you hoping to do with your new rifle? If you are looking to master the fundamentals of shooting, as hard as this is to hear, you will be best off with good quality (read: FGMM, Black Hills etc...) until you are capable enough of finding a cheaper alternative that performs close enough.

Runwat1, Send me a PM when you get your gun.

It may take a day or so to get back to you.
If your close enough and we can get together, we will get you on paper fast.
And make sure your gun is set up right BEFORE you get lead on target.

Getting the rifle setup correctly is MORE important than getting lead on target.

You can shoot my rifles as well. Let me know what rifle you have. And if you need to borrow glass for a day. (N/F or Leupy) I will bring it along.

Your buying the morning coffee. Thats my rule.
I supply a little ammo and smarts.
You supply your rifle and whatever ammo you will shoot AFTER we get your rig sighted in.

                        Cheers,
                        Twystd1

I'm not familiar with Twystd1, but I highly recommend the type of hands-on help he is offering. I am just back from ASR with a few calgunners who shoot there all the time. After following the steps above (bore sighting at 25 yards, on paper at 50 yards then paper at 100 yards), and with the help of a spotter, we found the dope on this setup and I was hitting steel at every distance out to 600 yards consistently. I'm a new rifle shooter and there is no way I could have gotten thru today without their guidance & assistance.

I know the match grade is about $25; don't need that. I know reloads are the best; can't and don't have the expertise at this time. What would you suggest between the Tul, bottom barrel, and expert level ammo?
I highly recommend buying the Federal Match and then reloading it. You will learn a lot and .. .. you already know the answer. If you are serious about accurate shooting, you will eventually reload, so why not start at the beginning with the new gun ??

Quick question... Is there a problem shooting cheaper .308 through a rifle that's not bolt action/precision? For example, I'm planning on purchasing a PTR and was wondering if I could just use some Wolf or Silver Bear since I'm a cheap*****.... I'm not trying to go out past 100 yards, just wana get out of the house at least twice a month without paying much for maybe 50-100 rounds down range per session. I need stress relief... $2 a bullet isn't guna help. Suggestions?
