    Starting .308 Ammo

If you were a beginner with a new rifle (Remington 700 Police .308)..... and you needed to zero a brand new scope....and you needed to "dial in" some basic skills...what would be an appropriate brand ammo to start with?

I know the match grade is about $25; don't need that. I know reloads are the best; can't and don't have the expertise at this time. What would you suggest between the Tul, bottom barrel, and expert level ammo?

Most competitive shooters give the advice to only shoot top of the shelf ammo if you are looking to improve your skills. It's hard, especially with 308, to determine what you are doing wrong if there is any chance of the ammo to be blamed.

You can pick up FGMM for right around $20/box online. It's expensive (welcome to shooting 308) and that's why I don't shoot my 308 too much.

I myself have been looking for a good 2MOA round for $0.50/round or less.

I have heard that Prvi Partizan ammo is not too bad at least in 5.56 rounds. It's not that expensive in the .308 168 gr either. This is what I was looking at getting when mine is complete so it will be nice to see others thoughts on this.

I'm cheap, have a $4000+ rifle, but shooting American Eagle AE308D 150gr. I'm happy as long as I hit my intended size target at whatever range, that's good enough for me, does not have to be pin point accuracy

Could it be any clearer? Any law that infringes on our right to keep and bear arms is a violation of the Second Amendment and is unconstitutional.

Man, that's surplus price. But hey, as long as it'll do the job, what the hell

Start with Federal Gold Match, Black Hills or Hunting Shack ammo. They can be found for about $1/round.

Why waste your time and ammo shooting subpar crap and chasing your zero when trying to dial in your rifle?

I agree with this statement, but I can also understand that cost is sometimes prohibitive. Some rifles do shoot fairly well with some surplus or budget ammo (NATO or cheap Remington UMC).

Both Black Hills and Federal GMM can be had for about $1.00 per round if you shop around though. Good luck.

You could at least try some high quality ammo to get settled in, then find the most similar, cheapest alternative.

PMC is a good plinking/ water bottle killing round. For sighting in or shooting for groups my R700 loves Hornady 168gr amax

                      Well said.

What's the point of using cheap ammo that will not shoot consistently. You can't tell if the misplaced shots are user error or because of the ammo, especially if you're new to precision shooting.

I've always experienced strange fliers with PRVI 308 (like up to 4-5 inches off) that don't happen with FGMM.

OP, what are you hoping to do with your new rifle? If you are looking to master the fundamentals of shooting, as hard as this is to hear, you will be best off with good quality (read: FGMM, Black Hills etc...) until you are capable enough of finding a cheaper alternative that performs close enough.

use what ever ammo you will buy the most often. I typically find Magtech ammo to shot very well. and its pretty in-expensive.

Which PRVI round were you shooting? Was it the Prvi Partizan PPU .308 168grn HP Match 20rd Box?

I'd buy a box of multiple different types and see what shoots best and what I would consider acceptable and go from there. Only real way of seeing what your gun like to spit out anyways.
