Getting back to the original question: Congressional Hearings held after the 1994 elections about repealing the AW ban heard testimony from several witnesses, including at least one woman, who had used AR platform rifles in self defense situations. Likewise, Masaad Ayoob's column in American Handgunner has mentioned a number of instances involving defensive use of an AR.

I hate the 'gay-fade' as I branded it. Why can't a man buy jeans and fade them by working under a car or something. Nope, everyone's a wus now and they need their clothes broken in just like their heads. Sorry. I see one reference for 'cross colour jeans' and I lose it. 'Someone I know has an $850 pair of jeans.' Do you think he argues online about wasted cash with people that buy $500 jeans?

My point, Cal-guns is swamped with bored folks. Answer the fing question and leave it.
Jeesh, i need to take a chill pill.

This whole thread's retarded and should be closed. No specific discussion point, lots of arguing over nothing, and lots of trolling. Random and pointless, and nothing that hasn't been discussed to death in the few months I've been on this board let alone before I got here.

I take it your question is about civilian or at least non-combat use. In that case never. But if you include military, there's probably quite a few of us.

I was in the L.A. riots on top of a building. I had a pistol , scoped .308 bolt action, 12 gauge pump shotgun. I still have those but after the riots I felt I needed a semi-auto rifle so I now also have four M4's, one of which has an $1,200 Trijicon ACOG. That is my preferred rifle for the next one.

AND you don't have to worry about 30-rnd mags or bullet buttons cause the cops will be all standing outside of the riot area.

The presence of an AR, an UZI, and a couple of other weapons prevented 12 gang members from trying to home-invade us. So yes, I have. Just haven't pulled the trigger.

I have never brandished nor fired an AR in self-defense; but twice I have had one loaded and off-safe in my hands, ready for use.

Once was when a neighbor in Oakland was pointing the barrel of a long gun out of his window as if to start sniping - he never fired, I never found out what was going on or if it was an airgun or a firearm. The other time I was in the shower, and looking out the thin window at the top of the shower I see two guys I've never met coming over our 8' rear fence. By the time I put on a pair of boxer shorts and got an AR out of the safe, they were gone - back over the fence as far as I know.

In both cases - opponent w/ a long gun, or multiple bad guys at across-the-backyard distance - the AR seemed like the best choice out of [handgun, shotgun, AR].

Both encounters were during the daytime - no fancy mall ninja gadgets installed on my AR's (I run them in A2 configuration), none needed. I would have been equally confident with AK in my hands during either event.

So far, the most dangerous thing I've ever shot at has been an aluminum can with jagged edges. My preference is for that to never change.

No one in their right mind would use something like an AR for home defense. The ideal weapon, of course, is an assault chainsaw with pistol grip.
