This is kind of a rant, but I just felt like posting it.
I have yet to find a truly awesome local gunstore that shows respect to all ages, has great customer assistance, and people that know their products. CWS and Ten Percent are absolutely top notch but not located near me. The one place with all of these qualities that I did find, Great Outdoors, has now closed. They not only closed, they closed just after I discovered them. Of all the times I have purchased firearms, the best experiences have been FFLs that just perform transfers, not sales.
Wild Sports has always had the potential to be great but they don't sell you jack until you are at least 21 (for ammo, over 21). I tried to buy .30-06 ammo from them (at age 21) once and they refused sale becuase the ammunition can be used in a pistol. They used the same reason with .223. I know .223 can be used in AR pistols and the like BUT THOSE GUNS ARE NOT LEGAL HERE ANYWAY! When I went in another time, that excuse became "Sorry, we only sell ammo to those OVER 21." Being 21 was not legal enough to buy ANY ammo there. However, in their F'ed up logic they would still sell you the guns.........but even if you drop serious cash with them you still have to have mommy or daddy present to say yes to an ammo purchase till you are of age 22 or older. See a problem here? I can't tell you how annoying it used to be in the past when I had to have a parent go in with me to help me get some .223 at a cheap price. While they have a fabulous array of stuff to sell and their employees do seem to know their product, their emplyees are not talkative about a product and don't seem interested in anything but sitting around.
Continuing the ramble on wild sports.....When my dad wanted to purchase a rifle for hunting he decided to go there. I figured he'd have no problem since he is nearly 60 now. I went with him to make sure they did not mis-inform him or sell him something rediculous. I told the salesman helping my dad to not sell my father a rifle chambered in anything larger than .308 or it would aggrivate past shoulder injuries and arthritis. The guy said "I have the perfect caliber in mind!.....270 Winchester!" Having never seen .270 before, It was clearly a smaller caliber. A week later when my dad bought ammo and brought it home I was furious. The bullet may be .27 caliber but the powder charge is essentially a .30-06. I drove over and immediately demanded that they rectify the situation. They were reluctant at first but eventually gave my dad a slip-on butt pad and some low recoil ammo. Avoid this place like the plague, just FYI.
Another place, Rancho Cordova Guns and Ammo, is great for most ammo sales (NOT .223) and their rifle/pistol selection. They don't sell off-list rifles, but that does not make a store bad. The store "feel" is what makes it kind of a terrible place to go. Everytime I go in I feel like I'm being pushed to buy something quickly or get out. The staff is not very conversational and actually tends to avoid answering any questions you may have.
I was just wondering if anybody here has gotten the same negative vibe from the AVERAGE gun store?
