There should be a SHTF subforum. Seriously. Can you imagine how much traffic that would get? Wow...

There should also be an optics subforum. Oh, wait..
Imagine if everyone who had a question about optics ACTUALLY POSTED THERE INSTEAD OF HERE. I know, it sounds crazy.

There are also two threads that belong in the Shoots, Meets and Range Stories forum on the first page of centerfire.

          Bob,

In the worse imaginable SHTF scenario, if you can sustain past the first few weeks there wont be much competition in the ensuing weeks; dehydration in 2 to 3 and starvation thereafter. People tend to get real lazy about their third day with no food. Saving your energy and resources, defending your ground from those without and banding with like minded neighbors is your strongest move. It WILL take the government weeks to organize. I worked on part of the coordination of various mobilization sites throughout Socal where food and medical supplies could be airlifted into Los Alamitos and distributed via UH-60's. You have to remember that in a likely scenario as the Big One, collapsed bridges and stranded vehicles will make the interstates and highways unusable for quite a long period of time. Those stuck between collapsed bridges on the roads aren't going anywhere but on foot. Keeping tennis/hiking shoes, water and a handheld GPS in your trunk at all times is a wise idea.

My super-liberal (to each their own, it's America), anti-gun neighbor just approached me and said, "I think I need an AR..." Seriously, lots of people on this bandwagon lately.

          Scenarios:

          Big One
          Dirty Bomb/Terrorism
          Disease
          Rioting
          Government shutdown
Currency devaluation leading to job, food, water and fuel shortages
Organized attempts at anarchy or lone wolf scenarios

The carbine courses are nice, but basic marksmanship and weapon familiarity is nearly as sufficient in a defensive posture. If you are in a situation where you are engaging targets at very close range and forced to transition to a sidearm, you are in the wrong place to start with and should have maneuvered sooner. CQB is a nasty environment, going in without body armor and teammates is a recipe for getting tore up. You will likely get hit in a solo, close range engagement with multiple threats.

Personally, I'm waiting for the house next to dieselpower to come available.

If you want an SKS, buy an SKS.
If you want an M1A, buy an M1A.
If you want an AR, buy an AR.
If you want a Marlin 30-30, buy a Marlin 30-30.

If/When SHTF whatever gun you have is the right one provided it works and you have plenty of ammo for it.

You know where the S just HTF? Go to Joplin MO. Go where tornadoes gutted homes and floods washed the remainder away. Go to Joplin and see that the only people running around with AR15's are police officers. If you want a "SHTF" gun, get a pistol small enough to hide on your person and a shotgun. Then, focus on the things that really matter. Having lived through 2 "SHTF" moments on Colorado (Front Range Blizzard of 1991 and Windsor Tornado of 07) the last thing anyone will tell you they wish they had more of was black guns and bullets.

The mentality of some people on this board is far removed from reality that it makes me wonder if we are literally dealing with 15 year olds.
Quoted for Awesome. I was in New Orleans after Katrina for a few months and man, the last thing they needed were guns. Ditto for India, or Thailand, or any other volunteer work I've done. The only situation where ARs are going to be useful is the Zombie Apocalypse or an all-out revolution against the State, and neither of those things are going to happen.

But Mailman, you hit the nail on the head. Be a realist, not an armchair survivalist. 30 Cents can buy you a bullet, or 4 ounces of dried food. When the **** hits the fan, I think I'd take the latter.

                AMEN!

we need to work together people! keep your SHTF guns tucked under your shirt or on a sling under your jacket (shorty AK) other than that stock up on food water and medicine and all the necessary cold weather gear and when your neighbors are hurt or need help INVITE THEM INTO YOUR HOME FOR HELP! save the boom boom for the gang bangers and "zombies" LOL! although SHTF in so cal or los angeles and inner cities will be much different from any other disasters. there are alot of weirdos living around here!

and its 18 to buy a rifle remember? not that far off from a 15 year old

Yeah sure, hand out cookies to the gangbangers, see how that works out for you.
Also, I wonder how all those female Peace Corp workers that were raped feel about volunteering? Blah, blah.

Right, because a few women have suffered at the hands of walking excrement, we should stop volunteering. Get your head out of your ear. More people are killed driving every day - do you drive? And nobody's suggesting handing out cookies to gangbangers, but the only way things get solved in a crisis is by helping, wherever you can.

no one said anything about handing cookie to gang bangers.. seriously you sound scared of the world. did those peace corp chicks get raped in america? i doubt it. here in this country the majority of us we pull together when SHTF

sorry 10% and even 1% is 10,000 possible problems...thats a huge amount of people that few understand the damage and problems 1000 people can cause....now think of 10,000...

the fact is, if the LA area had to evacuate, all small towns outside of LA county are screwed... completely screwed.

People have no idea what a high level of damage an evacuation of a large city will cause.

IMHO, International volunteers tend to be naive idealist who are left leaning bleeding hearts. Most of that group are anti-gun. And.... those Peace Corp rapes were the direct result failed policies of their American left leaning PC directors.

Inquirer / Blaze- I retract my statement of handing cookies to gangbangers, sorry. Just don't want to throw granola bars at them.

SHTF can be closer than we expect. Just think about it, what if the "big one" happens after this post? Or tomorrow? You will all be sorry for not having your SHTF rifle when looters come in looting your food/water supply.

i know most of the gang bangers in my neighborhood anyways so its cool. the only reason im still here in the city is because im taking care of my grandfather on his deathbed. soon afterwards i will try to convince my immediate family to buy some good land outside, far outside of the city/california so we can move to hopefully BEFORE SHTF but i am not too worried about a natural disaster. im more worried about government collapse or a virus outbreak. if its a natural disaster our government will help us sooner or later, not that im relying on them but they will help soon enough. anyways, we can only prepare for the worst and hope for the best but i dont want to be anywhere near so cal when it happens. i do know i will try to evacuate my family before the SHTF if possible. because yes the traffic and idots trying to flee will be gridlocked! better off on horseback or dirtbike! lol

and ****, i sold my damn car to buy SHTF rifle...lol
