Buy a Ruger 10/22 as cheap as you can (<$200), then add a scope rail (~$10) for picatinny/weaver rail rings.

I would also highly recommend replacing the magazine release and bolt release with Volquartsen or similar parts (about $30) to make it easier to use. The 10/22 is a REALLY simple gun, you'll have no problems swapping parts yourself.

There are also really good, cheap stocks out there that are far more comfortable to use, especially with a scope. Good ones are about $100.

The 10/22 is nice because it's semi-auto, which is by far a better choice for plinking fun.

By the way, the incredibly large abundance of aftermarket parts is why 10/22's are probably the best choice. Go over to rimfirecentral.com for more stuff.

If you're on a budget, there's also the .22LR Marlin 795 - very similiar mechanically to a Marlin 60 but with 10rd detachable magazines and Monte Carlo style synthetic stock. http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firear...ading/795.aspx

The 795 is accurate and reliable out of the box. I bought one last year for $108 new. The Marlin often comes to the rifle range and indoor ranges with me as it's cheap to plink at $10 for a 550rd brick of .22LR.

Here's mine after a few modifications. It's not pretty, but it's a lot of fun.

10/22 is the standard, but I'm very happy with my Marlin 60.

Actually, I have. I was quoting Walmart prices. Around $10 for Federal, and $11 for Remington or Winchester per brick. Walmart has it's uses.

I need to find a Walmart.
I keep seeing $13 everywhere for those federal 550rd packs.

Yeah, the Federal 550 pack is under $10 (before sales tax) at Walmart. I've been buying thousands of .22 rounds lately. I'd rather be stock piling 5.56, but they're rather scarce at the moment, not to mention expensive.

At my Walmart it's $13.50 before tax already. I been using a coupon at another store for 500 rounds for $10.00 plus .78 cents.
