For plinking ammo and stockpile, I personally wont spend more than about .30 a round. Most the times I find 1k xm193 or equivalent for about $300 shipped to my door, every now and then I come across a deal for 1k for 270ish. For match ammo, expect to pay significantly more, I only shoot steel targets so I don't waste my money on Match booleets.
OP: Don't let them hurt your feelings about the rail, we buy ARs for the modularity, rails, etc... most folks I know buy a tricked out AR first and then realize they don't need all that weight and then build a second KISS AR.
I would buy a set of iron sights and get good with them, if your optics fail, you still want to be able to hit stuff. Then buy a S load of ammo, if you can afford to buy in bulk I know the guys at Tactical Ammunition dot com will give you a deal and probably some others. PalmettoStateArmory is good to go for ammo, consistently lower prices and $12 flat rate shipping per 1k rounds.
