    Sniper Rifle Remington

I could use some suggestions on what to get as far as a good sniper rifle, bolt action, .308. I was looking at Remington M40's, not sure if they are worth the money, or buy a good basic 700 and do the upgrades on my own. I talked to someone at a store the other day, and he seem to believe that the newer Remington's were not as good anymore. I have seen some Remington USMC M40's out there, but they all want a premium for the collector value of the gun, not sure if they are worth the $2,000 average asking price, since the the original price on these went for about $1400 about 4 years ago.

You can buy an M40 from Remignton if you call. They aren't cheap and your best bet if you want to go that route is to buy a GA Precision clone.

This question is something that comes up over and over again so expect guys to tell you to search.

What do you want to do with it? If it were me and you have a limited budget and don't plan on doing any upgrades, go with a Remington police model in 308 and find a decent scope.

Yea I'd suggest going GAP clone as well. Just as good just no collector value.. So if you plan to shoot it that's the rifle for you... Plan on keeping it locked up in a vault for 20 years to make some $$ get a true M40

For a Sniper's Rifle, I suggest you get whatever your LE department or Military unit issues you.

As for Precision Rifles, I'd contact either GAP or R&D Precision and have them build me something.

I own a Remington 700 VTR .308 and I have no complaints. Attached a Leupold scope and Harris bipod. Great gun.

Sky's the limit. What's your budget? If you can afford it and want to buy a ready made precision rifle, check out a custom builder like Spartan, TacOps, or Gap. If you want something cheaper to start out with to get some trigger time to learn how to really shoot and figure out what you really want, the 700pss or 5r milspec are nice compromises. I just drossed a 700 pss myself because me shooting a GAP would be a waste and I just can't afford full custom right now. YMMV. Also, realize that unless you're a seasoned precision shooter, any of the rifles I mentioned with quality glass and ammo will outshoot you for a long time. If you don't reload, think about starting as quality factory ammo will cost you a lot while you're learning to shoot properly.
            Good luck with your quest.

Hahaha I almost said the same thing.

OP you might want to change the title. "sniper" is for military/Call of Duty kids. We call them precision rifles here. You might get trashed for using the word sniper rifle

How about a Remington 5R or 700P LTR? I know people that own both of these, and they can be as accurate as the custom rifles (with a few tweaks), for much less money.

I'm not sure there's really any such thing as a "Sniper Rifle."

                        Maybe a "Sniper's Rifle" if you're a sniper.

                        Otherwise it's a "Precision Rifle."

My recommendation is the Remington 700 5r. The barrel is essentially the same as the military's "Sniper Rifle" but the rifles is sub-$1200. Mine shoots about .5" groups at 100 yards if I do my part (and use match-grade 168gr ammo), and I'm not that good of a shot so someone else might even squeeze more out of it, especially with handloads.

if you want a precision rifle without dealing with all the modifications for cheap go to the WTS forum here and check out my Rem 700 XCR Tactical. As others have said, most of these bolt guns will outshoot you (or me), advantage of XCR is adjustable trigger, and Trinite finished barrel so don't have to worry about scratching, and has brand new Zeiss scope, arguably the clearest glass in the business, all included for $1,900!. Just thought I would mention since it's all right there included if you are looking for at least what I feel is a quality precision rifle.

I bought a R700 SPS Varmint and upgraded many parts myself. I got a nice sub 1/2 moa shooter for under $2000 which still has the factory barrel and action. Everything else was changed.
