The millionth Q on optics for bolt gun.

Yea, I know- search. I did and read and I think I am looking for 4ish-18ishx50ish for use on the Remington 308 PSS I bought today. Just looking to shoot 100~400yds paper, and to 'kill the 600yd pig' at Angeles. I don't want to do all kinds of custom stuff to it, just get good glass, and get it mounted properly. No expert here on these things, I'm a millsurper who likes to reload for my old swedes and rubins, but I got the long range bug and my old eyes just don't cut it with irons past 100 yards. So I fell in love with the Remi after convincing myself I needed the Savage LOL. It feels good. So the wait begins...

Good bang for the buck in the 700 clam area, plus another 250ish for mounting solution- a rail mount? I want to do it right the first time without going too crazy on the optics. I might even put that on my heavy barrelled .223 AR and put my 3-18 IOR illum scope on the Remi if I can find some low 35mm rings. Suggestions?

Hello, I am not a "veteran poster" but i do, do quite a bit of shooting, and in my opinion i would get something less than what your budget involves. Not long ago i was in your boat, and i opted to get a millet scope for my Remington 700 in .308. I got the buck gold with target turrets and mill dots and i can say i couldnt be more pleased. It cost me ~279 on sale from midwayusa, and was worth every penny. The optics are very bright (has 50mm objective lens) and the focus is dead on and crisp. So far i have used it to shoot accurately up to 850 yards. With the savings on the scope you could put the rest of the money into either ammo or something like a custom stock like i did.

Dont get me wrong though, if i was a baller i would love to spend on a nice nightforce but for now im quite happy with my not so costly scope. As far as the mounts go i went with millet mounts as well and they are solid, they have quite a bit of surface area to grip the scope. Also millett stuff is supposedly life time guarantee, but i have had no reason to contact them yet.

My $.02 from a guy who actually goes out and shoots and does not just get his info from others on calguns

You have that nice IOR. I'd put that on the Remington and I'd look at the SWFA Super Sniper 3-9 for the AR. It would fit in your price range and it's an FFP wilth mil/mil adjustments, fits the AR's range well. Just a thought.
As far as mounting, check out Badger Ordnance for the rail, one piece picatiny works well, and IOR makes 35mm rings along with many other companies. Good luck.

There are always deals on the Leupold 4.5-14x Tactical Mark IV models in the SHotgun news.

This scope has been recommended to me as the highest magnification for a working Tactical rifle in 308 (unless you are concentrating on 1000yard shooting)

We just had a meet-n-shoot at ASR yesterday afternoon and there were 4 heavy barreled Remington 700's in .308 there! There were quite a few set-ups you could have tired to hit that 600 yard little pig with (my favorite target is the little red one).

For your budget, I would check out Vortex Viper PST and Badger Ord rings and mount.

I was pounding the snot out of that little pig yesterday i think I hit the mounting bolt like 10 times over the course of the day.

To the OP, while I wont recommend a particular scope, I will suggest you narrow your search to a scope that has a first focal plane reticle and that the turrets adjustments match the reticle, whether its MOA or Mil, both are perfectly fine. Even though my Leupold MK4 6.5x20 is a good scope I don't have it mounted to anything at the moment and don't like using it since getting used to FFP and matching reticle and turrets.

I think in the end, that I am not getting the best use from my IOR so I will find some low rings (have high ones right now) and look into that Badger Ordnance rail and set it up on the Remi.

Maybe that Vortex or a Leupold would make a better match on the AR.

Now to buy some bullets and brass and maybe powder if I don't already have a suitable one... Can't wait to measure that throat (hear they run long, like my Swede Mausers) and get crankin.
