I have noticed over the years that there is a certain group of gun owners who are extremely judgmental. For example, I've taken my 18" barrel shotgun to a trap range to try out some trap shooting. The range master actually told me that my gun is used to kill people(vs sporting), and so he doesn't like it on his range. However, since there is no range rule about the minimum length of the barrel, he had to allow it. I've also heard of people who will push the limits of the firearm law, but will also deride others for speeding. Perhaps they thought that infraction is more serious than felony? I guess there is probably some truth to the saying that some people buy guns to compensate for their other short comings.

Don't ask, Don't tell
Next time you see someone with an illegal configuration or does not answer your questions to your satisfaction. Get their name, description, car license and type of firearm. Call your nearest LEO and submit a report, or better yet try to do a citizens arrest..
That or do nothing and let it go. Were any of them older, retired school teacher types, with longer gray hair and smells of pipe smoke? I think I may know him..

Civil disobedience is the active refusal to obey certain laws, demands and commands of a government or of an occupying power without resorting to physical violence. It is one of the primary tactics of nonviolent resistance. In its most nonviolent form (known as ahimsa or satyagraha) it could be said that it is compassion in the form of respectful disagreement.
Civil disobedience has been used in nonviolent resistance movements in India (Gandhi's social welfare campaigns and campaigns to speed up independence from the British Empire), in South Africa in the fight against apartheid, in the American Civil Rights Movement and in peace movements worldwide.
The American author Henry David Thoreau pioneered the modern theory behind this practice in his 1849 essay Civil Disobedience, originally titled "Resistance to Civil Government". The driving idea behind the essay was that of self-reliance, and how one is in morally good standing as long as one can "get off another man's back"; so one doesn't have to physically fight the government, but one must not support it or have it support one (if one is against it). This essay has had a wide influence on many later practitioners of civil disobedience. In the essay, Thoreau explained his reasons for having refused to pay taxes as an act of protest against slavery and against the Mexican-American War.Last edited by Steyr_223; 08-08-2007, 9:31 PM.

I think it is a good thing to let people know they have an illegal firearm. You don't have to be rude or snippy about it, just let them know.
I also don't think those people who have illegally configured rifles somehow give us a bad name. I think such a mindset is just what the anti-gun crowd wants. I think the somewhat common occurance of illegally configured firearms is more of a statement on how confusing and wrong our laws are, not the character of the people who own them.
Again, it is the right thing to simply ask people if they know the laws concerning their firearm. If they do, then you simply say, "Man you got bigger balls than I do." If they don't, you might have just saved them some big time trouble.
This isn't about minding your own business, it is about looking out for one another. For those of you who don't care how your rifle is configured and don't want to be bothered at the range, we need to have a T-Shirt made for you that says on the back, "I know it is illegal and I don't give a damn." Again, my response is "Man you got bigger balls than me" and some people think I am gutsy.
It is my duty to tell my customers who come in with an illegal weapon what they have and I will continue to do so.www.tenpercentfirearms.com was open from 2005 until 2018. I now own Westside Arms.Comment

I took mine to the Range....
I configured my two OLL the normal way, with all the evil features
Reason? I don't need them. So they stay in the safe until the laws are better. I have a lower that is registered. But when I was telling folks here how I had taken them to the range to see if the triggers were going to give me any grief, You would have thought that I was the lowest form of life
Two or three of our most wise ran over me, and beat me like a step child
I am one of those folks who will not challenge you at the range because of your gun. It's your own business. Who am I, God????
I won't be wronged
I won't be insulted
And I won't be laid a hand on.
I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them.....John WayneComment

Actually I've always thought of that as more of a California trait. I've spent time in all parts of the country and never have I run into people more eager to tell another adult how to behave for their own good and I'm not talking about guns. The next time some fat slob old broad squaks about her health and tells me I shouldn't smoke, wrinkles her porky nose & waves my cigar smoke away from her 3 or 4 chins as she's wolfing down a burger and fries with milkshake, I'm going to actually put the thing out. In her blueberry pie.

Why is it necessary to even bring up the point? If you know it is illegal fine, good for you. If the guy is doing something illegal and doesn't know and finds out the hard way that's what being and adult and building your own guns brings with it. If he's exercising civil disobedience and doesn't care same thing. If that bugs you too bad, you can do the same if you like.
So many people who are at the ranges these days act like full capacity magazines and AR rifles were just made yesterday and are somehow illegal or dirty by their very nature. They feel the need to comment with words like, illegal, lucky, or phrases like; where did you get that, how did you get that, isn't that illegal?. Guns have been around for a long time, just because you stated shooting recently doesn't mean everybody has. The more guns are treated like dirty books rather than the tools they are the more this kind of discussion will come up.
Get over it and shootwhere are my pistol mags?Comment

I just got back from the shooting range a few hours ago. The group in the lane next to us definetly had illegal weapons. Brand new AK47 and brand new AR15. Atleast they looked new, so I doubt they were pre-ban and the group looked too young. Evil features attached, no magazine locks, and 30rd mags. Apparently one of my co workers overheard the owner of the guns saying he went out of state to buy the mags.
Not the first time I have seen illegal weapons at a range in SoCal.Comment

I won't challenge anyone on their gun unless I might be affected (i.e., your doing something stupid like sweeping the bench with it loaded). I would have ignored them - for all I might have known, they could have been LEO. If they asked me, of course, they would have gotten a sonnet or ode to OLLs.I configured my two OLL the normal way, with all the evil features

However, cut most men, even deeply, and advice comes out before the blood does.
In any case, I wouldn't store them that way. There have been more than a few people recently that did nothing more than have one evil feature and it got blown out of proportion due to a search for unrelated matters. One example - guy had a flashider on an M1A - and he had it in his safe. You would have thought he had an RPG ready to fire and aimed out his window! What's the point of losing your right to buy or own a firearm due to a silly feature left on a gun that takes 45 seconds to remove (pistol grip and/or flashider).
But if not, your choice, and good luck - go "Henry David" go!

It just calls more attention to us. In a non-gun owner's and so many cop's eyes, we're already criminals. Why make it any easier for them??? The more of us that stray, the easier it is to pass new laws.
Please, if I'm doing something borderline tell me. I don't need to go to jail to learn something.
But I really do MMYOFB. I was at Pala last week. This guy on lane one pulls out his fully featured AR and 30 round mags. I just continue to break open my AR to stuff a maximum of 9 rounds in... half an hour into this, his buddy shows up. In a San Diego Sheriff's cop car. Turns out they were both LEO's. Damn, I'm glad I was breaking open my bullet button equiped AR.Comment

Simply ask a naive question on this forum and you'll see how "helpful" a lot of folks are. they are more interested even here in showing what they know rather than educating. Be-littling others seems to be the MO of a lot of posters here. If we took a different tac, like educating and being supportive and helpful, we'd see a lot better response. Also, if you ask someone if that's a pre-ban, they'll usually be happy to say yes, and conversation is over.
If someone comes to me and asks questions, their attitude dictates how I treat them as well as their questions.

This is so true!Come on, that's just hand-waving and playing games with semantics, the mentality's the same.
look at glockman19's comment, which was my point along with Randall's:
"pre-ban" stuff has been around for years, yet those who were fortunate and/or had the foresight to buy their goodies sometimes get the 3rd degree while minding our own business at the rangeComment
