Rem 700 vs AR 10 (are they even in the same class)

Was just sitting here thinking what is the pors/cons of getting a rem700 over an ar10 style rifle. the reason i ask is i love the AR style platform but want something that will be able to reach out past 1000 yards or so... so why is the R700 better for long rang then a 308 style AR or is it?

Either one can get you out to 1000 yrds. I don't think one is better than the other. I personally like the R700 since it is a bolt action and makes you slow down when precision shooting. Plus it is a super simple platform and easy to clean

Well, here's some food for thought...

The first place team at the 2010 International Sniper Competition used LaRue OBR's. There's been some talk crediting the trigger but the bottom line is that this AR-10 variant delivered better than any of the other rifles including the Rem. 700's.
      We're giving away a MULTITASKER Series 3 AR-15 Multi-Tool on January 5, 2015.

It comes down to the shooter. A few months back I shot next to a guy who had a totally tricked out Rem 700. The only thing that was stock was the reciever...at 100 yards he was getting 1.5" groups while my father's AR-15 20" black hole barrel was doing sub-MOA. Im not saying the AR is better, Im just saying, put that gun in front of a good shooter and it will be a good gun.

So your question of which is better? Both are good, just gotta know how to shoot it first.

The biggest difference between the 2 is price and amount of lead you can send downrange. I think it may be easier to get a R700 to shoot accurately especially if we are comparing stock guns, but the AR can be just as good if you get a quality setup and trigger which equates to.

Bolt action rifles are stiffer and have far less moving parts. Someone mentioned the 2010 internaional sniper comp. They don't shoot out that far. A semi auto has the advantage for closer engagements especially in limted time engagements. It all depends on what your targets are and where they are at. Just because the OBR's did well at the international sniper comp doesn't mean they are the best 1000 yd gun.

Remington 700 for serious shooters, AR 308 for mall ninjas.

              J/K

Both are good choices, I prefer the Rem 700.

i'm no expert but i'd say that it's mostly a matter of money.

an r700 will get you out to a 1000 for a fraction of the cost.

if money is no object then build an ar.

                  Good info here ^^^^

You're going to shoot PAST 1k?

If you are shooting long range AND you require precision, go with a bolt action. Sure, there are .308 ARs and the like that can be just as/roughly as accurate as a bolt action but it is MUCH harder to be as precise with a semi-auto. There are just more variables to worry about while shooting a semi-auto.

Use the right tool for the job.

Now, if you are wanting to shoot long range but are just shooting at big steel plates or something like that, then a semi-auto might be something fun for you to play with.

With my LMT .308, I have shot to ~~700-~~750 yards with consistent hits.

Did I shoot for groups that far? No, but thats because I dont really care as long as I hit my target at such a distance. It does the job but bolt actions will typically do a more consistent job at medium-long ranges.

Another thing to consider is how often you will be shooting PAST 1k, or even near it.

With enough money, either of them will out shoot your abilities. The R700 will take less money to go beyond your abilities. If I had a billion dollars and could only buy one gun, it would probably be some form of a semi-auto, but at what point do you move off the AR platform an onto something like a Scar or something is a whole other ball game. Anything can be made to shoot well if you through enough money at it.

Both can do it. A 700 will be much more innately accurate than a 308 ar platform for a lot less money. Think of the glass you will have to put on the thing and factor that into the cost too. A 5r out of the box is an excelent bolt gun which can be had for a around1k. A run of the mill 308 ar will cost you at a min 1500 on the cheap and not be able to touch it. Factor in a 1500 dollar scope for either and you are way ahead with the 700.
