    Best twist rate for AR?

I have been hearing conflicting stories on the best barrel rate of twist for target and plinking loads. I hear 1 in 7 is what I should get but see 1 in 9 more often. Any advice on what the pros and cons of each might be? This is for my first AR build. Thanks in advance!

This is what I've been told. And go by.

    1:7 for dropping body's
    1:8 for custom rifles/groups sizes
    1:9 for plinking/lower end rifles
For Sale: AR500 Lvl III+ ASC Armor

      Best for what?

      There is NO best.

This question gets asked every week. What is the best car? What is the best woman?

For most of us civilians that shoot for fun, get a 1:8 or 1:9. Get a 1:7 if you want to shoot longer/heavier bullets.

I've tried searching this subject but I was unable to find anything so I apologize if this is a consistent question. I think 55 gr bulk is the majority of what I will be shooting but am interested in setting up for longer range target shooting as well (100-300 yards).

first rifle? buy a complete upper and shoot the **** out of it.
more than likely its going to be a 1:7 and yes, that is good enough.

                This.

Don't worry mate, you'll be building another one soon enough, and by then you'll really know what you're looking for too.

Depends what type of ammo you are shooting and what your rifle's purpose is for.

The fate of the wounded rest in the hands of the ones who apply the first dressing.

According to ths 1:9 will fit the bill.

45gr Varmint to 55gr, 1:12-1:9 is optimal, but a 1:9 will still stabilize up to 77gr
62gr match shooting? Stainless bull barrel with a 1:8 seems to be preferred.
1:7 really is not needed by any civilian.
Manufacturers make what people want. People want 1:7 because the military uses 1:7 (to stabilize their longer tracer rounds).

1:9 really is the best all-around twist. Run a 45 or a 55 through a 1:7 and there's a good chance that you'll spin the jacket right off of the bullet.

This is a blasphemous post. Everybody knows that if you gun a 77gr bullet through a 1/9 twist barrel God will kill a kitten.

Kidding. Get anyone you want. Looks like a 1/9 is better for what you need it for, though.
Will trade liquor/wine/beer for parts and accesories and ammo! PM me. Dont drink n shoot. Offer void where prohibited. Must be 21 or older, etc. etc.

for your first ar build and shooting mostly 55 gr ammo go with the 1:9
have fun building it and shooting it. You can always build another one in 1:7 if you feel its necessary for your purpose.
