My google fu wasn't good enough to find the old threads about FACTORY ammo that was released without flash holes a few years ago. More than a couple calgunners ended up blowing their rifles up trying to shot it.

Personally, I'll trust my own reloads a lot faster than I will trust factory ammo. In fact, I almost lost an eye to a ruptured Elley .22lr case years ago. Even high end factory ammo has problems.

I've run about a thousand rounds of Miwall's .223 thru my evil black rifle. While it's not the tightest grouping most accurate ammo I've ever used, it is reliable. I've used their rifle and their pistol ammo with no regrets.

It sounds like you're ok at least, OP. Get on Miwall's case about the faulty round, show them that .223 brass, and the kB!ed Bolt Carrier.

If u don't reload your own ammo or are getting yours from a trusted source why would you put unknown cheap ammo through an expensive firearm......u probably wouldn't put 87 octane in a high dollar sportscar. Spend a few more bucks and reduce the chance of blowing ur own face off

+1, even if I get some in a trade, I would disassemble them and load them to my spec, even at $0.28 each reload, my +$1800 is not worth taking the chance

if these reloads came from the likes of Miwall or Ammo Bros, then yo can take it up with them as they are a license reloader

I'm glad I don't have to go to the range on weekends-- at least during the
week you don't have to be elbow to elbow. Pete

Don't even post who made your rifle because people will try to blame it on that company when they didn't do anything wrong haha.

Glad you walked away with all your digits my man.

Wow, good to hear there were no injuries (I assume since it wasn't mentioned). Sorry to hear about your weapon also. From what pics you posted, it does look like a case separation. It would be very difficult to double charge a 223/5.56 case... at least not with the commercial powders that I've seen and used.

Good luck with MiWall. Hope everything turns out OK.

I agree with those saying it fired out of battery. The first picture shows that the round was not fully chambered when it went off (hence the expansion at the case head). This could be due to a primer that was not fully seated (most likely; as others said, dont trust other peoples' reloads), or your firing pin sticking for some reason. I could be wrong here, but this is what the evidence tells me.

As for whoever said it may have been a double-charge, try double charging a .223 and tell me that you don't notice it: it will easily overflow. Double-charges are more common with pistol ammo if I am not mistaken...
