    painting my AR15

I want to paint my ar. i bought the krylon tan color ultra flat paint. i tested it on some other thing i had laying around. it is perfectly flat, no shine at all. but the color is a bit light. its not as close to fde as i thought.

I would really like to paint my lower, a grey color. but i cant find anything flat enough. everything ive found has a gloss to it.

does anyone have any recommendations? if not grey, then a flat color thats closer to a magpul fde?

Be cafreful with krylon.. Pretty much anything your guns touch with that on it just takes it right off..

If your looking for a temp job your good. But if you want to have it stay use Duracoat or Ceracoat.

Reason the military snipers ect. use it is cause its not their personal rifles and if it rubs off no biggy they just spray it back on later or only need the camo for a few days its not really meant to last for ever. Just a heads up.

There is many ways to make it stick. Just did mine. Yes the brake isnt tight yet ( waiting for it to dry all the way) and the front grip is backwards. Its been changed.

OP you don’t have to worry to much about the shine at this point, that can be dulled up during your sealing phase…

The most important thing when painting any firearm is the prep!..

        You’ll need to do this..
        1. Disassemble everything as far you can go
        2. Degrease everything.. I highly recommend the Duracoat trustrip
        3. Buff / lightly sand everything with 400 gr paper
        4. Wash and air dry it, or use an compressed air, just make sure its dry..
        5. Use “Bulldog” Adhesive promoter!.. This can be found at any auto parts store.
        6. Apply 3 very light coats of BD
        7. After 15 minutes, start on your primer, use “Sandable primer” again look at your auto parts for this item.
        8. After 3 light coats of primer then use 0000 steel wool, hence the sandable primer.. Once you’ve gone over the entire surface with the steel wool, clean everything one more time, again compressed air works great here..
        9. Now it time to reassemble everything as your prep work is now complete, and you can start painting..
        10. Once your painting is complete, get some Clear matte spray and put on like 10 coats, each coat will take about 5 minutes to flash..

        Have fun and post pics..

I just painted my .308 AR a couple days ago. Heres the thread, and in it it has a link with how to get close to FDE

Pretty much you need some Rustoleum Dark Taupe and spray a little bit of Rustoleum Oregano (both in Satin) until it gets close. Its much closer to FDE that it looks like in my pictures.

I've used krylon and their color are usually a "cream" color. I like to use the Camo paint at walmart. They work great so far and I've painted alot of my rifles with those colors, heres a few samples of the Camo paint:

Then here is one I painted with Krylon:

Dunno if you can tell in the picture but in person you can tell that the Saiga isnt as "aggresive" looking as the cricket in the picture due to the "cream" look.

PS: that scope mount was just a test... its off the saiga now. haha.
