If your looking for 1" groups at 100 to 200 yards.. Or
have a $3,000 rifle get a bore guide.

If your looking for CQB and a battle rifle M4 and not going to be shooting
out to 600 yards.. Just clean your dam rifle.. Use a bore snake and be
done with it if your scare the cleaning rods will damage your rifle.

But than again its your rifle.. do what you want with it..
Just like driving a Mercedes that requires 92 octane premuim gas,
would you put in 82 octane?

Me, i'd preferr my rifles to shoot at its best given the weapon and caliber type. If i didnt care for any kind of accuracy i'd just get an ak or sks type rifle because whats the point, those rifles can't shoot the broadside of a barn anyways.
        THIS!!!!!!

Without a bore guide you can gouge or scratch the **** out of your barrel. It doesnt just protect the crown.

A brass rod CAN and WILL damage the inside of your barrel if you are not careful. It really doesnt take much force for it to do damage. It happens all the time.

Bore guides are cheap, just get one and use it. Be gentle with that rod too.

Why would it only be for bolt actions?

I am pretty serious about accuracy in my firearms and I do wonder about bore guides, although I do use one, but how would it matter if it was a bolt action gun or semi auto? By the way there is at least one reason for using a bore guide. The bore guide will come with an O ring seal that keeps any solvent from getting onto the trigger, stock, receiver, etc. The idea for the bore guide is to keep the cleaning rod from contacting the chamber, throat, bore and muzzle crown. But like you, I also wonder about how much damage could be done with an aluminum, brass, carbon fiber or other relatively soft cleaning rod, but the serious shooters swear that it matters. Perhaps the soft metal get scraped off into the barrel, or even though it is soft it can still erode certain sharp edges inside the throat, I don't really know. But whatever the reason, it would apply equally to an AR or a Remington 700.
