Why are carry handles and butt stocks so expencive.

Ok why is it when you buy a complete upper with A2 carry handle. Its only $50 more (average) than a upper with out...

But yet for that same carry handle its around $110 to $150 for a decent carry handle... I thought you were suposed to save $$ building a AR ground up??

Why are mil spec butt stocks and carry handles in general so expensive when bought alone??

Yea I was thinking about that. But at the same time I dont want a total POS..

I dont know much about NCstar. Not saying they are pos's just saying I want to make sure I get something decent.

I just wanna know why such a price hike?? Im almost tempted to just buy 1 basic upper and another upper with everything on it and just take it off and the rest of the other upper..

You can buy complete VLTOR modstock packages with the tube/spring etc. from BCM for $99.00ish (just went out of stock) or just the stock for $49.00. VLTOR makes top quality stuff.

              Who told you that?

There are very few things in life that you can do cheaper by assembling the components yourself.

Go ask a body shop about replacing the right front fender, hood, and door skin on a Corolla... the charges will be 75% of the cost of the car.

              Same goes for rifles.

When we build it up, we're paying retail for every individual component. When we buy it complete, we're buying from someone that bought, at worst, at dealer cost, and most likely well below that, so even after they add their markup, they are significantly below retail for each component.

Plus, an a2 upper receiver has the handle machined into it when the upper is made. The detachable handle is a seperate part, which means seperate time on the CNC mill, plus there is more area to machine, and more parts.

Ya, but he's talking about uppers like the Stag, which are actually A4 flat top uppers with a detachable carry handle.

Why anyone would want a carry handle other than to be "retro" is beyond me though. There's a reason the A4 does not have a carry handle, and that reason is because an optic mounted to the top of the carry handle S*U*C*K*S.

If you want cheap, Magpul MBUS are about $90 for a front/rear set (front must be rail-mounted).

Ask any Marine what happened after his Gunny caught him actually carrying his M16 by the "carry handle" and ask him if he ever did it again.

Carry handles have to be milled very percisely. if they are off even the slightest, you can not use them.

NStar is hit or miss with their carry handles. It could be a waste of $30, it could be fine. Since its a limited use item, its your call.

If you plan to actually use the BUIS or Optics rail for PRIMARY aiming...DONT CHEAP OUT!

Personally I think that iron sights (carry handle) is the. Best way to learn proper marksmanship fundamentals ..if not a carry handle then rear sights with windage AND elevations..

Just be patient and watch for deals. I waited for my stock and found one that everyone sells for 150 for only 90 by just looking around and being patient.

I am sort of going for the retro look but at the same time I'm looking to have a standard ar to be able to shoot and get to learn iron sites. It doesnt hurt to learn in my opinion at least until I can get set up with the rifle then look at putting on some optics later on.

I picked a couple rifles I liked and look around for pricing. All of them were around 1400-1600 dollars.

I am putting one together from the ground up and I'm coming in at just under 1200, so I have saved essentially 200-400 dollars. So if you want to have some savings by doing it yourself it's possible but your going to have to look around for deals.

John Wayne didn't use the carry handle in the Green Berets so I don't feel I need one.

But what parts are you using?
What is the quality of the completed rifle you were looking at compared to the one you are assembling?

I was going to go cheap on my carbine and go with a DelTon upper, but decided not to compromise and went with a Daniel.

The only thing I cheaped out on was the FACOG.
