Mid range I'd go with a Nikon Monarch 4-16x42SF with the Leupold 4-12x40AO as my second choice.
If you don't need a veriable power scope the SWFA SS and Bushnell 3200/4200 offer alot of scope for the money.

I would be careful with EGW bases. The cost is reasonable but the screws on them tend to be soft and can break. I prefer one piece solid steel base like a Warne Tactical Maxima or Badger Ordnance. They are very pricey but work very well and solid as a rock. For rings the Burris Xtreme rings work great. Mid rnage scope prices will varyon magnification you are looking for. But Bushnell Elites, Nikon Monarchs, and Leupolds are very very good scopes for the money.

I just mounted a weaver tactical 5-15x50mm mil dot recitle with leupold mark 4 medium rings and a leupold mark 4 20 moa base on my buddy's 700 sps 20". I thought that is a great set up for under $900.

Got everything from riflescopes.com and they did price matches from other websites.

Looking at bases (assuming one piece is preferable to two piece). What is this rifle considered to be - a short action or a long action as described on a commercial site like Midway.

Dang, there are a lot to choose from! http://www.midwayusa.com/browse/Brow...787***13792***

Oh, and thanks for all the input so far.

Millet scope. 3x-9x would not be enough for me if I were doing an M700 build.

Question: "Best" mid-priced scope and recommended rings/base for this rifle?

Order a barrel from Krieger in 1:7 w/ a .223AI chamber. Load up 80-90g pills and have your self a no recoil 1000yd shooter.

The TPS rings are great as are the Leupold PRWs & Warne - each is all steel and reasonably priced, about $35.00 each from Brownells. Warne two piece steel bases are fine - I like putting steel against steel even though the 223 isn't going to do much bouncing around.

Konus is making a pretty good "not too expensive" scope in the $300.00 range, Mueller has good glass but lousy short relief. A Burris or Nikon for about $300.00 may be possible in the Natchez "refurbished" offerings.

The first setup I had on my 700P was a Nikon Buckmaster's 4.5-14x40 with mil-dot reticle and SF. It was $300 from optics planet. I used a Leupold 15 MOA standard base with the Leupold standard rings. It was a nice setup! It worked really well and it never lost zero. The scope tracked really well too. All together with the scope, rings and base, it should cost you around $400.

You might also want to check out the Millett TRS-1 riflescope. I've heard many good things about them but I don't have any first-hand experience with them. Snipercentral did a review on them a while ago and they have them on MidwayUSA and Optics Planet for decent prices.

                                Quick Release Rings

Do any of you-all favor the quick release type rings?
