    Rem. 700 Shooters ~ Need Advice/Opinions

New to the bolt gun game. Just ordered a Rem.700 SPS Tactical in .223

Question: "Best" mid-priced scope and recommended rings/base for this rifle?

Looking at bases (assuming one piece is preferable to two piece). What is this rifle considered to be - a short action or a long action as described on a commercial site like Midway.

Thanks in advance for your indulgence.

Grats on the buy. Bolt guns are awesome.

I like the TPS rings and EGW base. You can get both for around $100

What is the budget on the scope? $300? $400? $500? Variable power? Target Turrets? All comes down to what features and magnification you want etc.

i like that you said mid priced. not too cheep. i would go for warranty. leupold has a good one and good selection on base models.

i have been thinking about putting a redfield scope on my vtr.

An appropriate scope for a .223 and something like - Wow this scope is awesome. It works as good as my 500.00 Leupold but was only 200.00!

I would go with Leupold rings and base go quality and you will never have to second guess if your rings and base is bad.

            Warner
or weaver is also good quality.

If you go with an 40 objective lens low rings will work.

            Nikon scope 3x9x40

Nice racks are much better. You can grab both sides of the rack to help stabilize while mounting.

For tactical rifles, I use at least Leupold Mark 4 base and rings. Nikon Monarch scopes are decently priced and good quality scopes in my opinion.

Lets see... If you're going for the 'Tactical' build there's the ever popular and highly regarded Super Sniper series by SWFA ($400). If you want crystal clear optics at mid-range prices there's the Bushnell 4200/6500 ($500-$800) series and Sightron S3 ($700).

If you want midrange rings and bases the only good pairing that I've found is a set of TPS rings ($55 or so with dealer discount @ Brownells) with an EGW base for about $40.00. Higher on the price range you'll come across Seekins Rings (I own a set and love em), Leupold Mk4, Badger and more. Below the TPS the only respectable set I've used is the Millet rings at a very economical $15.00.

I've had Burris XTRs fail (screws would back out), Burris Zee Rings actually deform at 25 in/lb (turning into an oval) and weaver rings strip at 15 in/lb.

If you want to browse through a truckload of optics reviews/opinions/ and "what should I purchase" questions you should try http://www.opticstalk.com/.

If you want a quick way to judge how two scopes stack up, you can try this scale: http://www.opticstalk.com/swfa-rifle...topic8185.html

More of an approximate than an actual price....

There's also the SS HDs for ~$800.00.

Ah man, I'm in the same boat but with 308. I'm torn between Burris Fullfield 2 4.5x16x42 or Nikon Buckmasters 4.5x16x40.
