I am in the process of completing an ar15 build.

I currently have the following:

Spike's stripped lower receiver
DPMS lower parts kit
DPMS m4 style stock

I am looking for a complete upper. I would like to stick with a known brand, flat top receiver, with a barrel of about 20-22 inches. Money is somewhat of an issue, and I would like to keep the upper in the $400 range.

What do you guys recommend?

Another...don't want to be an *** but look down a few posts from wherever this lands, I'm sure there will be a thread that is asking the same thing. Your price range for a rifle length will be hard. Good luck!

for about another $130 ish on your upper, you will end up with a MUCH higher quality one

It'd probably be cheaper to just buy a complete rifle kit and find a nice stripped lower receiver from a local gun store.

Friend, take it from another newb, it's not worth going cheap. In the end, you really do get what you pay for. For example, I have spent money on clones because they were cheaper....In the end, I wound up buying the real thing. Same goes for your upper.....you have your lower. Go and get that built and then save money and get a nice upper.

those cheep jse uppers are calling my name right now, just ordered my psl kit and receiver blank for my pistol build and have an egyptian ak kit being built to, cheep ar upper isn't sounding to bad right now lol
