    Best .308 for HD/SHTF?

I've been researching the best rounds for HD/SHTF. This is what I've chosen:

    9mm : Winchester RA9T
    .40 : Winchester RA40T
    5.56 : Hornady 75g TAP
    6.8 : SSA 115g OTM Tactical Load

I know there are other good choices, but this is what I've decided on.

But I have no idea on .308. What do you guys suggest?

    thanks.

Who in their right mind would use a 308 for home defense?!

Defend my 300 acre farm from mutant bears after the zombie apocalypse happens.

Seriously a .308 is a good 600-800 yard gun typically and with that what ever your gun likes. Your AR might like Tap ammo but mine may not. Don't go on what sounds good on the net, get what shoots good in your gun, which requires you to test a lot of different rounds.

Only head shots are effective. Therefore you need super accurate match grade ammos. I suggest that you hand load your ammos.

The only long gun for home defense is a shotgun. Take you pick on the types of loads you want to use - there are a lot for you to mix 'n' match.

I agree with reductio. With 5.56 NATO and 6.8 SPC why do you want a .308 for HD? But if you need longer ranger capability check this out:

I was thinking the same thing until I noticed the post for people with acreage. This would bring new meaning to overpentration in a residential area.

.308 for HD???? hmmm yeah I hate having neighbors they suck go for it!!

If you are asking what is a good .308 then I would have to say the M1A full size with nice tactical scope and a harris bi pod.

                    !Thread jack alert!

SHTF again huh...? Just use the guns and calibers you already have and use the money you would have put towards the "ideal" into ammo for your guns. Cause I know exactly what will happen in a SHTF scenario just like everyone else on here. We're that good.

                    End thread jack.

Sorry about that. Don't know what came over me.

Ok, perhaps I shouldn't have said HD. But I am looking for a really good .308. Is there one or is the .308 so powerful it doesn't really matter what you choose?

It all depends on your intended target. Humans behind light cover or in mad max vehicles are best dispatched with a fmj, zombies are kinda like jelly, so a 150gr softpoint would probably be better. Those work on mule deer also. For counter-sniper operations in excess of 600yd, you would benefit from a well made 168gr hpbt. Ymmv.

Read the link I posted and try some of those to see what works in your gun. Like already mentioned you could use it to hunt with if necessary.
