I've got a Daniel Defense DDXV. I can take my lower and stick a side-mounted, magazine-fed, bolt action upper on it that is .416 Barrett or .338 Lapua, no problem, right? But sticking a .50 BMG upper on it would make it an illegal assault weapon? I thought uppers weren't regulated?

How does the fixed magazine thing come into play? does the side mounted magazine also need to be fixed/with bullet button? What about belt fed? How is that regulated?

uppers, by themselves, are not requlated. It is only when possession/usage of them causes an illegal configuration. Owning a .50BMG upper is not illegal, but if you install it on a lower that is not a registered AW or registered .50BMG rifle, you have created an illegally possessed .50BMG rifle.

fixed magazines are only required when you want to have a semi-automatic centerfire rifle that has "evil features". With that side-mag upper, it is a bolt-action rifle, not a semi-auto, so there is no requirement that it be fixed.

Now, with a belt-fed upper on a semi-automatic centerfire upper, you do have what is most-likely considered to be a detachable magazine, so you would need to set it up to be a featureless build.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

So a side mag on an upper is...not a mag....but an ammunition belt.....is...a mag? So if I go featureless, and a belt is a...mag...then do my belts have to be 10 rounds or less?

^No, he is speaking specifically about that Tactilite upper. You can clearly see that it is a bolt action rifle. Because it is a bolt action rifle, it may have a detachable magazine, not because the magazine attaches from the side.

Your belts must be 10 rounds or less unless they are pre-ban just like your standard magazines, and yes, your rifle would have to be featureless.

The bolt action side fed upper you showed does not need a fixed mag because it is bolt action. The aw laws apply to semi auto center fire rifles.
