ar piston conversion ?'s

i noticed most piston conversion kits come with supplied handguards for correct operation of the system....will magpul moe handguards interfere with the system?...2 piece rails?...free float?...

im thinking of converting to piston system, but i dont like the look of the standard handguards....thx for the help guys

it depends on what system you get.

Daniel Defense makes a Omega Piston system that works with 'most' piston systems.

There's no standard for piston conversion kits, so each manufacturer must supply a "will fit" handguard/rail list.

well if you want to put moe handguards im thinkin you might need a dremel to make them fit. as for rails youre gonna have to see how large the piston system is & how much room you have to play with on the rail system you want

I think I saw on Magpul's web site that MOE handguards are claimed to be piston compatible.

It's highly likely that they can be made to work with just about any conventional gas piston system.

I have a cmmg piston upper and it's nice but I could only find a midwest industries rail to put on it and the daniel defense piston omega rail which I have on it. super expensive btw. you can't just slap on a cheap rail on them. piston uppers are cool cause they don't get nearly as dirty. but my piston upper adds a lot of weight even w/ my light weight dd omega rail. If your gonna go piston just remember your rifle is gonna be noticeably heavier.

I have a Stag model 8 that I slightly modified the Magpul MOE hand guards to fit. 60 seconds with a dremel opened up enough room to fit the larger piston tube up front.

I am not a fan of free float hand guards or aluminum hand guards on 16" piston guns. They soak up heat and if you are shooting targets inside of 200 yards you really dont need free floats in my opinion. I'll go free float if I ever plan to become a bench shooter with a long barrel and bipod.
