  • Quick SAGE system question

Well just wanted to ask one quick question before going off to watch a movie this late night. Is it legal for me to be in possession of a SAGE stock set for my M-14 if it is _NOT_ installed on the rifle. In otherwords, if it just sits there with NO rifle in it and ONLY has a rifle in it when I'm in Nevada that's legal right?

Also, along those same lines of questioning: would it not then also be legal to assemble the M-14 into the SAGE stock in the PRK _PROVIDED_ the magazine release installed into the stock was pinned as per the Cali legal FAL? In otherwords have the SAGE set up with a pinned mag into it and then just install the rifle in there for some fun now and then loading via stripper clips through the top guides on the M-14?

FYI, you probably know this, but there is a Kali version of the Sage stock, which has a straight stock attached to the chassis instead of the pistol grip/telescoping stock.

I can answer your second question, which is yes, if you make the magazine fixed with 10 rounds, you should be able to have as many evil features as you like. The first question, as to "constructive possession" or whatever it is called I will defer to others more knowledgeable, but I would expect them to say that there is no problem simply possessing the parts. IIRC the "constructive possession" concern relates to federal NFA type issues.

I believe your answer is Yes, and yes.

I was thinking of douing exactly the same thing sicne I almost exclusively shoot with a 5 round mag in my M1A. The 10 rounder will always have 5 rounds in it anyhow

Who makes a good 10 round mag?

Just get the 10 rounders from Springfield. That's what I use for my rifle. Basically I was going to plan on even putting a whole new trigger group into the sage so that way all I had to do was pull the upper part of the rifle out of the other gun and not have to fool around with different trigger groups since one will have the mag locked.

Almost comedy if you ask me though. SB-23 seeks to ban "Assault Weapons" but all you have to do to get around it is put in a different trigger group and you've beaten the ban. The M-14 even has stripper clip guides on the top so we're good to go as far as loading is concerned. Know of any good spots to get .308 stripper clips?

          Since I have a spare m14

All right you guys got my attention, I bought a polytech M14 this weekend and have been drooling over the sage stock setup but hated the Kalifornia option. I am having the poly made up into a bush rifle configuration by Fulton armory. I will also have it put into a sage stock. Any advice on how to go about pinning a 10 rounder in place??? I like the two trigger group idea for my frequent trips to Reno (only a two hour drive to free state)

Hey Gunner you in the Sacramento area too? Heh, maybe we can compare notes on getting this project put together. Heck we should go shoot our CA-legal SAGE rifles when we're done sometime heh. Anyhow I figure have the two seperate trigger groups so you can interchange to make it both a CA and NV legal stock system. When in CA use the fixed and the stripper clips.

Only prob with the stripper clip loads is that you can't have anything other than a red dot or scout scope mounted due to the mount.

Shopkeep, I am East of Redding. Not too far for a drive. I have been in conversation with Clint McKee at Fulton Armory about this project. Lets see what he comes up with. As for only being able to use the Dot sight with the stripper clip option thats actually why I wanted the whole setup was to use an Aimpoint ML anyway.
If anyone has an improved Kalifornia legal setup I would very much like to see some pics.

                Thanks,

The mag release is thick enough, you could cali-fal it, and drill/tap it for a long set screw which when screwed to fully contact the mag, keeps the mag release from operating.

                      looks good

                      Donger,

Wow most people would get pissed if I called them Donger. Nice setup. If I had not seen the real deal this would be something I would jump on. I have my trigger group here trying to figure out a best case plan on making a Kali legal Sage stocked M1a.
Does everyone agree that the Cali-Fal trick of the set screw bearing on magaizne is the way to go???

The big challange we're facing here is that the M1A magazine needs to come in on an angle to get into the gun. Therefore you can't just slip it on up and screw it. We'll have to find a way to remove the pistol grip first, otherwise we could potentially have an "AW" on our hands for a few brief moments.

I plan on just using a 10mm set to pin it once the mag is in the gun. Then put the pistol grip back on and toss on a good tactical sling and we're in business. I guess a big advantage the FAL crowd is going to have on our new creations will be that they'll be able to mount higher magnification optics because of their forward stripper clip guides. We're going to be limited mostly to EOTech and Scout scopes. But hey, the M1A has INCREDIBLE accuracy so who cares? And you gotta admit the Sage one-ups the FAL in terms of cool appearance.

                          pic host

Shopkeep I agree on the cool factor of the sage. I had a spare chinese m14 trigger group in my tool box so I did a little drill and tap job last night. I am going to use a set screw that bears against the magazine to hold it in place.
I agree that to be 100% Kaliban legal the grip would have to be removed before the mag was realeased for cleaning. However I am just going to have to do my total cleaning when I shoot the gun in Nevada Luckily I am close to the border and this is feasible. If I can find a decent picture host (Free) I will try and post some pictures of my idea.

You know I read a post today about the possibility of a hinged magazine... kinda like how the fixed magazine on the SKS is hinged. What if you could lock in the front of the M-14 mag and then swivel out from a hinge there? That would create and "emergency release" type of option to unload the rest of the mag without having to use the action. It would also make it infinitely easier to do swap-outs between the sage and the regular stock.

Anyhow let me know what you come up with in your efforts. I think I'll probably call Fulton Armory too to talk some more about this with them too. And of course then comes the obligatory DOJ letter when we figure this out.

                              Fulton

I have corresponded with Ckint McKee and his response was vague. I cannot blame him. He said that Fulton does not offer the service of pinning the mags.
I have my chinese trigger group modified and functional. I am a little leary of sending it in to the D.O.J. I work for the state and know how weird they can get.....
