    DPMS .308?

Hey all, I've been considering a .308 AR platform for quite some time now, and after having read a lot of raving reviews about DPMS' LR308s, I'm considering giving them a shot (heh, get it? shot? ). I really have no idea where to begin. How I can get it into CA, if I'll need a bullet button (most likely), etc.
    Anyways, I'm wondering if
    A. Anyone here has any experience with them or any input or advice to share, and
    B. If anyone knows whether or not the same rules that apply to them or can give me a process of what to do to make this happen.
    Thanks.

DPMS is a no go by name. Check out the AW & OLL Guide pull down on the top of the page. You can get a DPMS pattern off list lower like POF, CMMG, JD Machine, Fulton, ect. Same rules apply as a 5.56mm AR pattern rifle. Check out LMT's .308, I've heard nothing but good things.

ok start with the AW flow chart for some of the general details about semi-autos. To help answer your question appropriately I first need to ask you a few questions.
        1. What do you want this rifle to do? target/hunting/long ranged target/plinking.
        2. How much are you willing to spend?
        3. Do you own an AR-15 pattern rifle already?
But I being poor, have only my dreams. I have spread my dreams under your feet. Tread softely, because you tread on my dreams.

Ahh, well, that's a drag. I was under the impression that the DPMS LR-308 was acceptable in California under the influence of this thread:

stating that the LR-308 rifle by DPMS is good to go in California.
I've read raving reviews about them all around, even sub-MOA accuracy from a number of reviewers. The LMT is definitely nice, but for the price I'd rather not.
          Thank you.

Just the lower is not allowed in CA, every other part on the rifle is. YOu can have your LR-.308 just with an Off list lower reciever, CMMG makes one, tactical machine, and POF in DPMS pattern.

I've followed through the flow chart and everything seems to be kosher. First off, I'm going to be using it for target shooting at intermediate range, working my way up to around 700m in time. $1400 is about as high as I'm willing to go. It's also the reason the DPMS LR-308 is so attractive for the aforementioned reasons. Finally, yes, I own a BCM 16" middy AR.

Hmmm. I fail to understand this. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but according to the link that I posted (please also correct me if that list is wrong), the LR308 is legal because it is an off-list lower (again, according to that link). The upper is a non-issue (assuming the upper has a 16" or longer barrel and is in compliance with CA law) seeing as the lower is the only part of the firearm that has to be registered.

                  that "off-list" list isn't 100% accurate.

the part you missed in the flowchart is that the DPMS LR-308 has Panther Arms marked on it and if you look at the "Appendix B AR series", you'll see "DPMS: Panther (all)" which would cover your LR-308, making it a listed AW.

There we go. This post explained all of it perfectly, thank you very much.
Now that that's out of the way, would you happen to have an "off-list" that is accurate and up to date? I guess I'll have to see about getting the upper by itself and finding a lower.

                      OK ...
The top half of the DPMS can be mailed straight to your door.
The stock and all related parts can be mailed straight to your door.
The inside parts of the Lower receiver can be mailed straight to your door.

The Lower receiver itself CANNOT be mailed to your door if it has the DPMS name on it.
However, there are different brand name of receivers that can be had, and you gotta register them just like any other firearms.
The brand names are CMMG, Tactical Machine, POF to name a few. These lower receivers are compatible with the DPMS top half you can get in the mail.

PM me for more explaination if need ... Hope this helps !!!

no lower receiver can be mailed to your door, since it is the part considered to be the firearm, and must go through an FFL.

correct, there are around a half dozen companies that make DPMS-pattern .308 lowers that can be transfered through your local FFL.

Rguns.net has the best price on the .308 uppers. However, please hope and pray that you dont have to ever talk to them or have a customer service issue. Get the Tactical machine lower for around 200 bucks, the CMMG is around 400 and so is the POF if I remember correctly.

If you're following the flowchart you'd notice that all DPMS Panther lowers are banned by name.

If you're trying to get this done on the cheap and aren't concerned with how nice your lower looks, I'd go Tactical Machining. Other options have been listed above. Good luck! The LR-308 is buckets of fun!
