    options for a spike's tactical SL-15 lower

i just got a spike's tactical SL-15 lower from riflegear the other day (http://riflegear.com/p-549-spikes-ta...olor-fill.aspx). it's a pure style preference, but the red contrast is a nice change and adds something to the lower. i'd recommend it not only for function, but form, which is so much of a lower's value anyway.

anyhow, do you guys know what the options are re the calibers of uppers i can slap on it. i know i can do:

    - .223/5.56
    - 9mm
    - .22LR

i've heard that .40SW and .45ACP (olympic arms) were options too, but haven't seen much of it. do you know if 7.62x39 or .308 or any of the more powerful calibers work with this lower? what little i found on that looks like a big fat no. if not those, i've heard the 6.8 rounds are pretty good too.

You can use .40S&W, .45ACP, 6.8, 6.5, 7.62x39 uppers on your lower. If you want to use .308 you will need a different lower, AR-10 style which would be Armalite platform or DPMS style.

7.62x39 and 5.45x39 are good for shooting on the cheap and will work with a standard AR-15 lower. For .308 you need an AR-10 lower. If you want max close range stoppig power look at .50beowulf and .458SOCOM, they work in a standard AR-15 lower. 6.5Grendel is good for long range accuracy

that's a lot more than i would've thought. it seems like there's really no good justification for any of the calibers. the larger rounds are uber-expensive, 7.62x39 is better with an AK, and i use a .22LR upper already for the cheap rounds.

maybe the 5.45x39, since the round is cheaper and it's so comparable to a 5.56. maybe .45ACP so i can take it down to my local indoor range instead of making the trek to an outdoor one. any thoughts?

Majority of 5.45 surplus is going to be magnetic if your range allows that...

pardon, i meant that AKs were preferable to 7.62x39 ARs because i'd read the ARs were inconsistent in properly firing. everyone knows the AK's reputation in that respect. i heard that the ARs are more accurate though, when they fire. i'm sure i'm overstating the problems associated with this.

that besides, i wanted to get an AK type next, so the 7.62 round was covered with that.

it looks like the lower will sit for a while till inspiration strikes...

Think of it this way, AK in 7.62x39 and AR in 7.62x39 means you only have to buy one kinds of rifle ammo and if you decide to take only one out you cannot grab the wrong ammo. Win, Win
